Ashes Cricket - Ducks, Golden Ducks And Diamond Ducks

Dec 3rd, 2010 by revivor

The Ashes cricket series in Australia has already delivered hatricks, centuries and a whole range of ducks!! For those who don't know "duck" from a "Swann" - here's your practical guide.

The Ashes is held every four years in England and every four years in Australia. It is always a humdinger of a series and this years has started in the same fashion. There have been big leads overturned, five centuries and quality catching and run outs. But there have been ducks!! What are ducks? Here's your guide.

DUCK - this is when a batsman (or "batter" to the Aussies) is out for no score. Originally from the phrase "out for a duck's egg" because the 0 in the scorer's book looked like an egg!! This humiliating for the batsman and worse comes if they are out for a duck in both innings (known as a pair).

GOLDEN DUCK - Worse than a duck is a "first ball duck". As the name suggests, the batsman is out first ball!! No time to get comfortable, the batsman has to go back to the pavilion as soon as they arrive out in the middle.

DIAMOND DUCK - This is a very unusual occurrence but it has happened in this Ashes series. Simon Katich was out for a duck BUT he had not faced a ball. His opening partner pushed the ball for a single and Katich found himself run out by a direct hit from Jonathan Trott. Out for a "Diamond Duck!!"

PLATINUM DUCK - This is often used for a duck on the first ball of an innings although there is one final odd way of being out for nought. A batsmen can be timed out for not reaching the crease in time (usually this is two minutes) - in this case the batsmen is out for nought without even reaching the field of play!!

More ducks than you thought were available but when Rick Ponting went for a "golden duck" in the second test at Adelaide 2010 there was euphoria in England.

I would love if they showed Cricket games in the United States. I am trying to understand the sport. It looks interesting from what I’ve read and the bits I’ve seen in TV shows and movies, but it doesn’t do the sport justice when I can’t watch it :(
