Natural Remedies for Curing Epilepsy

A brief review of the various natural remedies avilable for the treatment and cure of epilepsy.

The term “Epilepsy” refers to a critical disorder of the central nervous system. It denotes a condition which is chronic in nature and where repeated attacks or fits occur with or without convulsions. Both adults and children can suffer from epilepsy. These attacks are more frequent in childhood and early adult life.

Epilepsy patients always face a problem of continual uncertainty whether or not he or she will have an attack on any particular occasion. Due to this fear of uncertainty of attacks the patient may refrain from attending any social events or gathering as it causes a feeling of embarrassment. Such people may also face difficulties in employment and other relationships.

The main symptom of epilepsy is recurrent sudden attacks at irregular intervals. During such an attack the patient may fall unconscious to the ground. There are two types of epilepsy namely Petit mal and Grand Mal.

Petit mal is a less serious form of epilepsy where an attack comes and goes within few seconds whereas an attack in case of grand mal comes with dramatic effect as it is a more advanced stage of the disease.

Epilepsy is caused by a variety of factors such as alcoholism, lead poisoning, different mineral assimilation and allergic reactions to certain food substances.

Nature Cure for Epilepsy: The treatment of epilepsy should first commence by observing a rigorous regimen by the patient consisting of complete relaxation, strict diet and proper exercise in the open air. He must adhere to a correct and simple natural life. He must assume an optimistic cheerful attitude and refrain from physical and mental overwork and worry.

Diet also forms an important part of the treatment. The patient should be placed on an exclusive diet of fruits for the first few days. During this period three equal meals of fresh juicy fruits such as apples, oranges, grapefruits, grapes, pineapples, peaches, pears and lemons should be taken by the patient.

Thereafter the patient can switch to a well balanced diet of foods such as vegetables, seeds, nuts and grains and fruits with more emphasis on raw vegetables, sprouted seeds and fruits. Milk products such as home made cottage cheese and raw butter can also be included in diet.

Foods such as tea, coffee, condiments, pickles, alcoholic beverages, greasy and fried foods, sugar and products made with it and refined foods should be avoided by an epileptic patient.

It is better to take frequent meals and overeating should be avoided by the patient. Eating large meals specially before retiring at night should also be avoided.

Mud packs are also very beneficial for an epilepsy patient as they help in removing toxemic conditions of the intestines and thereby hasten the removal of epileptic conditions. Application of suck packs should be done twice on the abdomen.

Application of alternate hot and cold compresses at the back of head is also very effective. The procedure is to dip the feet in a bucket of hot water and first apply a hot towel and then a cold one to the back of the head. These alternate hot or cold towels should be kept for two or three minutes for about four times a day. Epsom salt baths twice a week are also very effective in cases of epilepsy.

Medical treatment taken by the patient for many years should not be discontinued at once. The dosage may be cut to half during the initial stages and then gradually reduced further until it can be left off completely.

An epilepsy patient should also remain physically and mentally active at all times and also avoid unnecessary stress and strain. He should strictly adhere to all the natural laws of good health and build and maintain highest level of general health. Above all overexcitement of any kind should be avoided by an epilepsy sufferer.

Thus it can be concluded that various natural remedies have been found to be beneficial in the treatment and cure of chronic diseases such as epilepsy.
