Not replacing a damaged floorboard can become dangerous if it is not replaced. Floorboards can be purchased individually at any floor specialist store. Be sure to purchase the same type as the one removed. Bringing a piece of the damage floorboard to the store will help the sales person in selecting the same floorboard replacement.

Step1:

Drill a series of large holes across the center of the damaged floorboard; avoid drilling too deep. You do not want to drill into the subfloor.

Step2:

Use a sharp chisel to cut off the tongue of the board being replaced.

Step3:

Using your chisel start splitting the floorboard by starting from the large holes you drilled. Work your way in both directions from the center until the pieces can be removed.

Step4:

Measure the opening and cut a replacement board to size. Place the new board next to the opening to make sure it will have a precise fit.

Step5:

Turn over the new replacement board and chisel off lower half of its grove so that it will fit over the tongue of the adjoining board.

Step6:

Coat tongue and groove with glue. Insert tongue, and then drive it into place, using a wood block and mallet.

Step7:

Drill pilot holes at each end of board and along its sides. Be sure to use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the size of the finishing nails. Hammer finishing nails into holes and sink nail heads.

Step8:

Refinish floorboard with polyurethane finish so that it matches the adjoining floorboards.
