How to Keep Your Job In a Recession
With unemployment on the rise it’s important that you become a valuable asset to your employer.
With unemployment on the rise it’s important that you become a valuable asset to your employer. Many who are employed fear of loosing their job because of the bad economy. As we all know its going to get worse before it gets better. The stimulus package is no guarantee that you won’t be laid off. To increase your chances of remaining employed I have listed some practical measures to take.
DON’T BE LATE FOR WORK- Don’t give your boss and excuse for firing you because you are constantly late for work. If your boss arrives in the office early, I suggest that you arrive fifteen minutes before your regular starting time. It’s all about perception and if your boss sees that you’re in early it may make a difference. Of course you need to look busy and not just sit at your desk until starting time.
STAY LATE- Again it’s all about perception. If you need to finish up some work, stay until it’s done before going home. This tells your boss that you are dedicated and care about the job you are doing. Before you leave for the day ask your boss if there is anything he or she needs before you leave.
VOLUNTEER for additional work or special projects to take on. This demonstrates you are ambitious and what to be a team player. However don’t take on additional work load that you know you can’t handle.
DON’T SAY NO- If your boss asked you do to something work related; don’t be too quick to say no. If it’s something that your boss doesn’t need an immediate answer, ask him or her if you can get back to them with an answer.
TRAINING- If your company offers training or will pay for work related training, ask your boss that you are interested. The more knowledgeable and experience you are in your job, the more valuable you will become.
WORK FROM HOME WHEN SICK- If you have the type of job that can be done from home, instead of calling in sick, tell your boss you are going to work from home. This also applies if the weather is very bad and you can’t get to work. This tells your boss you are a dedicated worker and not looking for an excuse not to work.
