In order for a relationship to develop into something more serious than casual dating, you need to know how to maintain a good relationship to start with so the relationship thrives and grows in the direction you want.

Boy meets girl - there is a mutual attraction between the two, so they decide to date. In order for the relationship to develop into something more serious than casual dating, you need to know how to maintain a good relationship to start with. How do you maintain a good relationship while dating so that it has the potential to thrive and grow into something deeper?

To maintain a good relationship while dating, it takes genuine caring, trust, respect, effective communication and consideration of each other's feelings and..fidelity.

Enjoy each other's company and participate in mutual areas of interests - like going to the movies, sporting events or just meeting up for coffee and a chat after work. The time you spend together should be more important than what you do, but it's nice to do things that each enjoys.

Try to be each other's best friend. Dating is about having fun, but more importantly - getting to know each other well and finding out if you really want to take this relationship any further.

Be supportive of each other's issues and address them properly with empathy and understanding. Be there for your partner when life gets a wee bit too much for them. Be a shoulder to cry on should they need it. That's what best friends do and if you have to go to your friends "instead" of your partner, there is something wrong with your relationship. You should feel secure in speaking freely to your partner. If not, you should find out why before getting deeply involved.

Interact with each other's friends occasionally. Hang out together in a group - go to concerts, go to the beach, visit a zoo or church functions. There are so many things you can do together as a group or as a couple. Hanging out with friends can give you more of an insight of how well your partner interacts in different situations and with different people.

Don't take each other for granted and respect each other's right to privacy when needed. We all need personal space and it isn't a personal attack. It's just a matter of a personal and usually, an occasional need.

Life has its ups and downs and so do relationships. Be supportive of one another. Encourage and help build up your partner. Never cut them down or make them feel lesser than they are. That only causes negative feelings and a gap to grow wider in your relationship before it barely begins.

We all have families that care about us. Make a point of "meeting the parents" when the time is right. Make a point of interacting with both your families on a regular basis. Neither should try to alienate each other's family in any way. Show them the respect they deserve.

Girlfriends and boyfriends may come and go. Your family will always be there and will see you through both good and bad times. Families usually pull together in times of distress. A healthy and appropriate relationship will offer you the same if you are with the right person and take the right steps in maintaining a good and healthy relationship.
