Keeping your pet healthy is very important, but veterinary bills can be expensive. Read on for ways to save money on vet bills.

We all know that pets are expensive. They require just as many needs as a child and sometimes even more. When vet bills get high, you shouldn't have to worry about going broke just to keep your pet healthy. Here are some ideas on how save money on veterinary bills.

Preventative Care

Saving money on vet bills starts with keeping your pet healthy from the very beginning. Feed your animal high quality food. It may cost a little more upfront, but in the end, you won't be spending so much at the veterinary office. The higher quality your animal's food is, the better their health will be.

Groom them regularly. Take care of their teeth and nails as often as you would take care of your own. Not only will it keep your pet healthier, but if you are grooming them regularly, you will be able to spot problems quickly that may have gotten worse if you weren't paying attention. The sooner you can spot health issues, the more money you'll save in the long run.

Make sure your animal gets plenty of exercise. Just like you, your pet needs exercise to keep their heart and body healthy. Regular walks or running in the park or a backyard will help to keep your pet at their top shape.

Shop Around

Don't go the first veterinary office you find. Call around for specials. Some vet offices have discounts for rescued pets, senior pets, or puppies and kittens. There are even some offices that specialize in discounted services like spaying and neutering. University veterinary offices will occasionally be cheaper than others because they will be training students. There are many vet offices that will offer the first exam for free.

Not only will shopping around save you money on your vet bills, it also allows you to find the best vet for your animal.

Pet Insurance and Pet Credit Cards

Pet insurance is another alternative to saving money on veterinary bills. Pet insurance works just like regular health insurance. You pay a monthly premium and small co-pays in exchange for big discounts on bills. If you are thinking about getting your pet health insurance, shop around for the best deals.

Another option doesn't necessarily save you money, but can help keep vet bills easier to pay. This option is a pet credit card. There are lines of credit specifically available for pet care. The credit card can only be used for pet expenses like vet bills, prescriptions, food, and grooming costs. The good thing about pet credit cards is that instead of having to pay one huge bill upfront, you can pay on it monthly. This option is a good idea if your pet is sick or needs an operation.

Good info - never be too cheap to take a sick pet to the vet, in most cases this is illegal - called “NEGLECT”
