Why developing good studying habits is so much necessary in academy? Why does your performance depends on your habits? How to appreciate the importance of studying habits and how to develop them? Why taking up a new course is always difficult? All these questions are answered in this article in the simplest language possible.
Studying habits that are created in youth are the most important. The older it is, the firmer it will become. This is why it is difficult to unlearn wrong studying habits that are learned in youth. Good studying habits should be formed as early as possible. You should learn as many good studying habits as possible during your youth.
A consistently good studying habit not only increases your accuracy, but it also makes sure that you get maximum number of opportunities in later life. At the beginning everyone has problem tying their shoe laces, but once it becomes a habit, he will do it spontaneously, without even thinking about it. Over time he will do it faster and with more accuracy.
Any great studying habit must first start with identifying one’s purpose to study a certain subject. Use all your imagination in that, ask your mentors and friends about it, do some research on the implementation of the things you’re about to read. A good studying habit must start with a very definite motive, without which the entire subject may appear boring. Ask your professors about the basic structure of this course go through the content and prepare yourself for the task ahead. You’re going to achieve something from a certain course you need to take the pain of studying the entire book. Going through the preface, titles is definitely a good studying habit. Read about the author; carefully study his qualifications and achievements. This is all going to help you set your motivation for reading the book.
Sometimes both the learning and unlearning process depends on will. That is, one should make an assertion of will that one will learn all good studying habits on or before a certain deadline set by one. The amount of emphasis you put at the beginning will determine whether you'll be successful or not. Take pain at the beginning and you'll find comfort with it in the end. Do all that is necessary to develop certain studying habit, which you think can be beneficial. Sometimes you need some assistance of others in developing good studying habits. Letting others know about your conviction often adds more certainty of success. We often do our best in front of others. So good studying habits are often developed under the encouragement of some other persons, like teachers, parents, friends etc.
Your studying habit should be aiding your memory which plays a crucial role in any form of learning. Once the motivation is set, its retention only depends on the depth of your study, that is, on your degree of learning the subject. The more interrelated information you can hold in your memory about the subject, the stronger will be your grasp on the subject. When you’re beginning a new subject, you shouldn’t hurry. The subject is going to have its first impression on your mind. The first impression, that is formed when you read something for the first time, is important. Make sure the first impression is correct and authentic. Go slowly if you need to. When you’re giving your mind the first input on a subject make sure that the information is reliable. When you’ll learn more on this the first impression shouldn’t contradict the new information on the same subject. When it contradicts, it acts as a potential resistance to the new information thereby creating hindrance in learning. If at some later stage you discover that the first information was incorrect, you have to go through the tedious process of first unlearning it and then putting the new information in that place.
Education is a studying habit which is supposed to be disciplined. Each new course is a mental training. We just train our mind in following new set of patterns, rules. What is a habit? A habit is some set of work that we do again and again. Whether mental or physical, nothing becomes a habit until your mind is first trained to adopt it. Suppose you have a habit to wake up after 8 in the morning, but you want to change that. The studying habits that you've exercised for long is not easy to change. You've to first prepare your mind then you've to choose your environment that will facilitate in developing the habit. You may use an alarm clock or may ask someone to wake you up at 6 sharp. Either way, you are going to channel the train of nerve pulses in an entirely different way. This is why any habit will at first seem difficult to adopt. The same thing applies to education.
Many people complain about problems they face taking up a new course. Many students actually find it difficult to pursue courses like mathematics, sociology or physics in colleges. The problems arise due to two main reasons. An advance course usually has some prerequisites. Without a proper understanding of set theory one will find it difficult to comprehend database management system. So before even beginning to study your course material you've have to absolutely sure that you fulfill the prerequisites. The problem can be resolved by consulting one of the professors in that field. The other reason is studying habit. You are facing problems studying a new subject because in order to do that you have to channel your nerve pulses in a totally different direction, which is in itself a rigorous task. A sudden change in thinking pattern, a sudden increase in pressure on certain nerves disturbs your comfort. This practically destabilizes your mind. This is just a conflict between two different studying habits. You are not scared of the subject; you are just being scared of changing your studying habits overnight.
Sometimes our old studying habit comes into our way of improvement. For example, someone may find it easier to remember something visually, whereas to some other auditory sensations are more effective for the same. The former should read, avoiding sub-vocalization as much as possible, whereas the later will read it aloud. But we may be a prisoner of our own old study habits and do exactly the opposite thing. Old study habits, though not necessarily bad, must be adopted only after carrying out sufficient experiments. If a wrong habit becomes firm, it becomes really difficult to change it. Recognizing good study habits and exercising them with discipline is the essence of education.
