CURRENT STATE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
This article is all about the existing renewable energy in the Philippines, how the government encourage people to participate in any activities that would enrich the renew sources of the country.
Renewable energy has been introduced in the Philippines more than two decades ago and yet there is still a huge potential to widely disseminate the technologies. From the facts and informations gathered by the researchers, records revealed that total renewable sources of energy in the country have a lesser share compare to nonrenewable sources. These renewable sources are the hydropower, geothermal, wind energy, solar power and biomass. Among the five types of sources, the geothermal power has greater contribution of primary energy. Hydro powers were also built in some parts of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Sources such as Solar PVs, wind energy and biomass were still used at present but for minimal applications only such as in telecommunications, electric generation and in street lights.
Despite of the on going development of renewable energy in the country, some inevitable constraints and challenges would normally exist. These challenges greatly affect the proper implementation and development of the said sources. To minimize its effect, the following constraints need to be addressed; a.) lack of awareness and interest to investment opportunities, b.) environmental and socio-cultural concerns, c.) technological constraints, d.) lack of investment in non-power applications and e.) lack of clear policies in the energy sector. To address these barriers, the government is promoting projects and programs to stimulate greater investments in the sector. The government intended to promote renewable energy technologies as a competitive energy option.
