For those of you who are on slow speed Internet connection, every small step to help make Internet faster matters. For instance, you can speed up your browsing a bit using a fast DNS service such as Free Google DNS. Or you can cache DNS queries on your Computer so that repeated requests are cut down, thus saving time. DNSspeeder is a free DNS proxy server, which stores DNS results on your local machine. The program changes the DNS settings to point to 127.0.0.1 (local host) each time it is run. So instead of sending a request to your ISP each time you open a website, your browser gets the information from DNSSpeeder. DNSSpeeder automatically refreshes DNS entries every 1 to 24 hours as given by the Interval setting. The main program interface shows a list of current DNS entries, along with their hit count. It changes your Internet settings back to default values upon exit. The program can be minimized to system tray, and automatically run at Windows startup. These and other settings can be tweaked from the Options menu.

If you see a Windows Security Alert upon running the program, click ‘Allow Access’ to stop Windows Firewall from blocking it. Block Websites Using Domain Filtering For all you concerned parents out there, we have already shown you how you can block websites by editing Hosts file. Using DNSSpeeder’s domain filtering is another way you can stop access to websites. You can filter out some websites, so that DNSSpeeder does not store their entries. When the added domain is requested, you can make DNSSpeeder give ‘No response, ‘Responding without DNS answer’, or ‘Responding with IP address’ given by you. For instance a request to YouTube can be redirected to Yahoo by giving the IP address of Yahoo! You can add exceptions to DNS caching in the form of a a list of domains, or using regular expressions to match domains.
