Here’s a list of the best and the greatest films of all-time from the 1920s up to the 21st century.

The Big Parade – 1920s

The Big Parade is the best film during the 1920s. It was shown in 1925. It is a ‘silent movie’ that tells the story of an idle rich boy who joins the US Army’s Rainbow Division and is sent to France to fight in World War I. It shows how he becomes friends with two working class men, the horrible experiences of trench warfare. It tells also his love story with a French girl.

The film, with a running time of 141 minutes, was starred by the ff: John Gilbert, Renee Adoree, Howard Bosworth and Claire McDowell. The film is the highest grossing silent film in cinema history, grossing $18–$22 million

Gone With the Wind – 1930s

The film Gone With the Wind is the best film during the 1930s. This 1939 American epic romance-drama film is adapted from Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 novel of the same name. The epic film, with a budget of $3.9 million, is set in the Old South in and around the time of the American Civil War. It tells a story of the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era from a white, Southern point of view.

This film, with a running time of 224 minutes, stars Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Olivia de Havilland, Hattie McDaniel and Leslie Howard. The film had an adjusted revenue of $1,537,559,600.

Bambi – 1940s

Bambi is the best film during the 1940s. This 1942 American animated film was produced by the legendary Walt Disney. The film with a running time of 70 minutes was based on the book Bambi, A Life in the Woods written by Felix Salten of Austria. It had gross revenue of $267,447,150.

Lady and the Tramp – 1950s

The film “Lady and the Tramp” is the best film in 1950s. It’s another American animated film produced by Walt Disney. It was shown in theaters in 1955 and with a budget $4 million it had gross revenue of $93,602,326. The story is about a male stray American Cocker Spaniel named Tramp and Lady, a female American Cocker Spaniel, who lives with a refined, upper middle-class family.

The Ten Commandments

Although “The Lady and the Tramp” is considered as the best film for the 1950s, I would like to add that the film “The Ten Commandments” which was shown during that decade with a running time of 220 minutes is also one of the greatest films ever made. With a budget of $13 million dollars it made gross revenue of $65 million in the US alone.  

This 1956 American motion picture that dramatized the Biblical story of Moses was directed by Cecil B. DeMille. This sensational and popular film is regarded as one of the most financially successful films made, grossing more than $65 million at the North American box office alone.  If adjusted for inflation, that will make it the 5th highest grossing movie in North America, with an adjusted total of $977 million in 2010.

One Hundred and One Dalmatians – 1960s

The best film during the 1960s is the film “One Hundred and One Dalmatians. It has a running time of 79 minutes with a budget of $4 million and gross revenue of $215,880,014. This American animated film which was released in 1961 was produced by the king of animated films – Walt Disney. The story was based on the novel “The Hundred and One Dalmatians” written by Dodie Smith.

Star Wars – 1970s

The best film for the 1970s is the 121 minutes long Star Wars. This film which was later re-titled “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope” had a budget of $11,000,000. This 1977 American space opera film which was written and directed by George Lucas had gross revenue $775,398,007.

Star Wars is regarded as one of the most successful and influential films of all time. The film was re-released twice with some modification and additional scenes and dialogues in 1997 and 2004.

E.T. Extra Terrestrial – 1980s

E.T Extra Terrestrial is the best film during the 1980s. With a budget of $10.5 million, the film had gross revenue of $792,910,554. This 1982 American science fiction film which was directed by Steven Spielberg has a running time 115 minutes. The film’s major actors and actresses were Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore and Dee Wallace.

E.T. is one of the most financially successful films and it ranks as the greatest science fiction film ever made. The film was re-released twice with altered special effects and additional scenes in1985 and 2002.

Titanic – 1990s

The film “Titanic” is not just the best film during the 1990s but it is also the highest-grossing film of all-time with a worldwide gross of over $1.8 billion. With a running time 194 minutes, this sensational film with a budget of $200 million, starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates and others. This American epic romance and disaster film was written and directed by James Cameroon.

The film is about the sinking of the RMS Titanic and the love story of Jack and Rose – who belong to different social class and fall in love aboard the ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage. It was released in 1997 and it was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won 11 including Best Director and Best Picture. Titanic’s 3-D version will be re-released in 2012.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – 2000s

For the first decade of the 21st century, the best film is “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. The film, which stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Sean Austin, Andy Serkis Viggo Mortensen and others, had a running time of 200 minutes. The film, with a budget of $94 million, was released in 2003 with gross revenue of $1,119,110,941.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which is an epic fantasy-adventure film, was based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings’ second and third volumes. The film, which is directed by Sir Peter Jackson, is one of the greatest critical and box-office successes of all time. It won all 11 Academy Awards for which it was nominated, an Oscar record. In addition, the film also won the Academy Award for Best Picture, the only time in history a fantasy film has done so.
