How to Read Tarot Cards - 06 - The Lovers

This is an article in a series on how to read the Tarot Cards. This series contains an in depth look at each of the cards' possible interpretations within a reading in context of their position. I will be using the Celtic Cross spread.

The Lovers On Their Own

The Lovers on their own is a card of innocent and soulful love. Usually depicted as Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, this card is full of symbolism of man before the fall into sin.

The Lovers is a card suggesting a person (or a couple) who loves from their heart, and not from their loins. Although, the union is meant to accentuate life in all it's purposes, this does not necessarily mean children are in their future. Life and love have many expressions, and this card should be interpreted as the receiver's ideal romance.

1. The Lovers as the Center

The Lovers as the Center suggest the situation is still in an innocent stage. If this is a relationship, then the two are still in the honeymoon phase. This will be true whether the relationship is one of long standing or brand new. The spark is still there. For non-relationship readings, this card suggests the situation is enjoyable, and full of wonder.

2. The Lovers as the Obstacle

The Lovers as the Obstacle suggests the receiver is too curious for his own good. He's wandering around the situation and making choices without much thought to the consequences of them, and this is the leading problem in the situation.

3. The Lovers as the Super-Conscious

The Lovers as the Super-Conscious suggests the receiver has an innocent curiosity about the situation. This is something completely new to him, and he is more wondrous about the possible outcome than decided on what kind of an outcome it will be.

4. The Lovers as the Recent Future

The Lovers as the Recent Future suggests an exciting prospect is soon to come which will effect the situation greatly. This could be a relationship, but doesn't always mean so. The receiver will approach the situation with great curiosity, and positive feelings.

5. The Lovers as the Subconscious

The Lovers as the Subconscious suggest the receiver is constantly on the look out for new experiences within this situation. There is a certain degree of wonder he has for the world, and continually desires to jump into the next great adventure.

6. The Lovers as the Recent Past

The Lovers as the Recent Past suggests the situation has come about do to the receiver's innocent curiosity. The receiver may have found he got more than he bargained for, but this is most likely a positive gain – at least it was expected to be positive.

7. The Lovers as the Receiver

The Lovers as the Receiver suggests the receiver still hasn't given himself over to the world and it's vices. This person is very curious about the world, but has yet to step off of comfortable territory and taste the fruit of life.

8. The Lovers as the Influence

The Lovers as the Influence suggests the receiver's home life is very simple and loving. His family and friends may not be the model of perfection, but for him, it's as close as it can get. They are supportive, and can be trusted when it comes to this situation.

9. The Lovers as the Intuition

The Lovers as the Intuition suggests the receiver doesn't have an ideal outcome when it comes to this situation. A strong curiosity is in his arsenal, and he enjoys thinking of the possibilities, but he has not decided on “the perfect ending.”

10. The Lovers as the Outcome

The Lovers as the Outcome suggests the situation will end on a fairytale type note. “And they lived happily ever after” is a certainty if things keep going the way they are. If the receiver has an ideal ending chosen, this could even exceed his expectations.
