When someone you know has suffered a loss, you can provide comfort to their troubled soul by writing them a condolence letter and sending them some flowers. The sympathy you express in this letter may very well help them get through these really tough times. So go ahead, and write that letter now.

Things You'll Need

  • Good quality paper
  • Nice ink pen

Steps

Step One Try to send the condolence letter and flowers as soon as you hear about the loss. It is hard to write a sympathy letter, but if you put writing it off, then your letter will not be able to reach the impacted person during the time of their greatest grief. Thus, make sure you write the letter within a week of the loss. Step Two Use good quality white paper and a nice blue or black ink pen and hand write your sympathy letter instead of typing or printing the letter.
Do not write an email or send an electronics condolence card. Remember, you cannot send flowers with email. Step Three Write the sympathy letter in your own voice so that it sounds like you, and not like a greeting card you bought at Hallmark. Step Four Start the condolence letter by acknowledging the loss and offer your sympathy. Step Five If it is a death and you knew the person who died, mention a few good qualities of the deceased that you remember, and how you will miss them in the sympathy letter. Step Six Offer help if they want or need any. Be specific if you can. And example is "I will gladly baby sit your child on my off days as you go through these very difficult times". Step Seven End the sympathy letter by telling the bereaved that they and their families or other affected parties are in your thoughts and prayers. Step Eight An example of a condolence letter is as follows. It was written by Renee, who sent it along with flowers to her friend Suzy and Suzy's husband Todd after they lost their daughter Elizabeth in an accident.

My dearest Suzy and Todd,

I am very sorry to hear about the accident that took Elizabeth from you. I can only imagine how hard it is for you; I wish you all the best in staying strong during these tough times.

Elizabeth was such a lovely little child. She had the warmest heart-melting smile, and a kind and generous disposition. I will miss her deeply.

I hope you can find the strength to go through this dark time together. Please let me know if there is anything at all that I can do to help. I get off work on Tuesdays early, and can pick up Charles from school and look after him until bed time.

You, Todd, Charles and Elizabeth are in my thoughts and prayers, today, and always,
Renee
