15 Absolutely Unique Breed of Dogs

There are scores of dog breeds - from hairless to long-haired and wire-haired, toy dogs, companionship and ornamental dogs, sporting dogs, herding and flocking dogs and many others. Here are some distinct breeds of dogs.

1. Bergamasco

The Bergamasco is a distinct breed of dog originally uses as a herding dog. It originated in the Italian Alps and its most distinctive feature is the unusual felted coat. It can also be considered a breed of dog without a face. It is a medium size dog, well proportioned and harmonious having a rustic appearance.

2. Irish Water Spaniel

This peculiar-looking breed of dog's land of origin is Ireland. It's bred for water retrieving and other hunting uses. The Irish Water Spaniel is a breed of dog that is the largest and one of the oldest of spaniels. It is also one of the rarest and is not everybody's dog. This is a special-purpose breed with excellent qualities and superb record of performance.

3. Saluki (Gazelle) Hound

This exotic breed of dog may be the oldest breed of pure-dog in the world. Saluki, a peculiar-looking breed of dog originated in the Middle East and bred for coursing. Some people insist it is the dog of the Sumerians knew and used almost 7,000 years before Christ. This dog is incredibly fast, once used on gazelle and later on smaller game. Saluki is said to be with a top speed of 48 mph or 77 km/h. It is also a dog of great stamina and endurance.

This breed is extremely rare and looks like a smooth-coated Saluki, although it is heavier in build. It has the distinction of being the only other breed recognized by Arabs as pure-bred. Its name means "The Aristocrat". It is well camouflaged for desert hunting and is extremely fast and active dog. This dog has characteristic black marks round its eyes and not suitable for urban life.

5. Chinese Crested Dog

This rare breed of dog that originated in China is one of nature's curiosities. This dog lacks the "doggy" smell, and their skin feels hot to the touch. It's bred for companionship.

The Chinese Crested Dog is like most hairless dog breeds comes in two varieties, both with and without fur, which are born in the same litter; the Hairless and the Powderpuff.

6. Schipperke

This unique breed of dog is from Belgium bred as barge guard. A Schipperke is a small breed of dog that originated in the early 16th century. The name means is Flemish for "little captain". Schipperke has been known to reach 17 or 18 years and is strong, durable, healthy and easy to keep.

7. Newfoundland Dog

This dog is a giant of a dog bred for sea rescue work. It is a large, usually black, breed of dog originally used as a working dog in Newfoundland, Canada. Newfoundland dog are not suitable for urban life. They are known for their sweet dispositions, loyalty, and natural water rescue tendencies. In the early 1900s, a dog that is thought to have been a Newfoundland saved 92 people who were on a sinking ship in Newfoundland during a blizzard. The Newfoundland dog excels at water rescue, due partly to their webbed feet and amazing swimming abilities. This dog is a lover of a dog: he worships its mater and his family.

This uniquely cute and pretty ornamental companionship dog originated from China. It is one of the most popular breed of dogs. It has been a long favorite with flat-dwellers who want a splendid little character to fuss over. It is known as the Little Lion Dog of China since ancient times.

9. Keeshond

The Keeshond is a medium-sized dog that originated from Netherlands and had been known as the Dutch Barge Dog. It is a perfect house dog. Handsome, small and companionable, it is a loyal, loving family dog and a good watchdog. It is also easy-going with other animals.

10. Bouvier des Flandres

This dog is not only unique in appearance but also unique for its purpose. This breed of dog served faithfully in World War I as ambulance dog and messenger. This breed originated in Belgium and was originally used for general farm work including cattle droving, sheep herding, and cart pulling, and nowadays as guard dogs and police dogs, as well as being kept as pets.

11. Chow Chow

This dog of China is at least 4,000 years old. Chow Chow is the only breed of dog left on Earth with a blue-black tongue. It is an aloof and dignified dog and was used extensively for hunting and guard work in China. This dog's other distinctive features are their curly tail and very straight hind legs.

12. Papillon

This distinctively unique breed of dog that originated probably from Spain is bred for companionship and is very suitable for city life. The most distinctive aspect of the Papillon is its large ears. Papillon is French for butterfly. It is the only working toy and this little butterfly of dogdom was meant to be spoiled. The butterfly dog is affectionate and responsive to his family and is a very good little watchdog. He will not fail to announce strangers.

13. Peruvian Hairless

This peculiar breed of dog called Peruvian Hairless Dog originated in ancient Peru. This dog is not to be confused with the Xoloitzcuintli or popularly known as Mexican Hairless Dog. The genes that cause its hairlessness also result in the breed often having fewer teeth than other breeds, mostly lacking molars and premolars.

14. Canaan Dog

This rare of dog from Israel is a sturdy guard-dog - fearless and easy to train. It has an in built distrust of strangers and an inherent aggression. This dog is bred for flocking and as a war-dog. It is the national dog breed of Israel and may have existed in the Middle East for a thousand of year.

15. Labradoodle

This dog is called a Labradoodle, a hybrid dog or crossbreed dog developed by crossing the most popular breed of dog - Labrador Retriever and the Standard or Miniature Poodle. These dogs are either unique in appearance or in characteristic or both.
