How to grow Hawaiian plants at home, for a little piece of the tropic to enjoy.

Having a Hawaiian plant adds beauty to the home, and can provide a tropical escape from the norm. The bright colors and often fragrant flowers give a lasting impression that makes growing these exotic plants worth the time. Hawaiian flowers can also be grown specifically for cut flowers, making beautiful centerpieces or leis for special occasions.

Anthuriums ,Bird of Paradise,Ginger, and Orchids are well known popular Hawaiian plants. These plants are easy to grow indoors, and not to expensive if started from cuttings. A cutting is a piece from a large full grown plant. It usually has leaves and roots, but must be carefully cared for until it has established a firm root base. The advantage of buying a cutting, is it will produce a full grown plant much faster and easier, than starting from seed. Tropical seedlings can be hard to raise, and do take more time to get to the flowering stage. You can find Hawaiian plant cuttings right online, for an affordable price.

Cuttings will need to be placed in a special mixture consisting of sandy loam and fir bark. The humidity will need to be between 50%-60% .Close attention needs to be paid to keeping the air temperature above 65 degrees at night and 80 degrees during the day. Soil must be kept moist, with good drainage.

Each tropical plant has its own likes and dislikes. To be successful at raising Hawaiian plants, its important to know just what makes each plant happy.

  • Anthuriums love to be misted with warm water, and kept out of direct sunlight.

  • Bird of paradise is a sun and water loving plant. Giving it large amounts of water and sunlight are the secrets to producing a healthy plant.

  • Ginger is another shade loving tropical plant. Keep moist and in a shady location

  • Orchids come in hundreds of varieties. Orchid-Dendrobium is a good choice for a sun loving orchid and Orchid-Phalaenopsis is a shade variety. It will bloom for up to 2 months once it starts, making this a great choice.

To be happy with Hawaiian plants, choose a variety that will best fit the situation. If creating a sunny atrium is the goal,be careful just to choose sun loving plants. A shady bathroom that needs to be transformed into a tropical paradise?Be sure to find only shade varieties. If the end result is needing cut flowers, choose plants with flowers that are long lasting, such as the Orchid. Some Hawaiian plants like the state flower Hibiscus, only flower for a day, making it hard to use the flowers in arrangements.

Growing tropical plants at home is enjoyable and very doable. Enjoy the process and reap the colorful rewards!

I love exotic tropical plants but it is so dry where I live that I think I would have a really hard time with them.  The bathrooms are small and no windows so that’s not an option.  My son and I actually just started 2 Bird of Paradise seeds.  They are under artificial light and are about 3 inches tall now.  We’ll see what happens.  Great article and helpful tips on taking care of these beautiful plants!
