The best way to keep your child safe from predators is to never let them out of your site. Obviously that is easier said than done. We all have to trust others to safeguard our children whether we like it or not. Teachers, baby sitters, troop leaders and relatives would never intentionally let anything happen to your child, however as a parent you know that no one can watch as well as you would. So what can you do besides worry? The answer is simple, GPS. That's right, you can know where your child is at all times by using a Global Positioning System that is attached to your child. GPS is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit that works in any weather condition, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

There are several different companies that offer child location services for a fee. Some of the most popular ones are the Giggle Bug Child Locator System, the Loc8tor Child Locator & Alert System and my personal favorite the Amber Alert GPS Personal Child Tracking System.

I like the Amber Alert GPS Personal Child Tracking System the best because it has lots of features and the GPS device is very small but accurate. It is easy to track your child by simply calling your GPS device and within 30 seconds you receive a text message with Yahoo maps showing the device location.

You can set up safe zones like from home to school so that if your child moves outside the zone a text message or email is sent to up to 5 phones or addresses. You will continue to receive safe zone alerts by text and email every 5 minutes giving you a bread crumb location trail. You can easily make changes to your safe zone via the internet. The GPS device has a SOS Button that your child can press and hold that will send alerts by text and email to up to 5 phones or addresses. You can also disable this button if your child is prone to pressing it unnecessarily. You can also set up a Temperature alert which will send alerts by text and email to up to 5 phones or addresses if high or low temperature thresholds are exceeded. This is great if a child is locked inside a hot car or left out in the cold. And finally, for the parents of teenage drivers, you can set up Speed Alert which will notify you if the device exceeds a predetermined speed. So if your device is going 90 mph, then so is your child! I highly recommend doing your homework by researching what system is the best for your family and lifestyle and that fits your budget.

Great article on protecting children from predators. It is of paramount importance to teach children to take a proactive role in staying safe from abduction and exploitation. My award-winning book, What Would You Do? A Kid’s Guide to Staying Safe in a World of Strangers, is a good resource for keeping children safe. The book empowers children to take a proactive role in staying safe from abduction or predator harm. It explains the concept of “stranger” to children in a very reassuring way. The book also includes a chapter for parents, teachers and other child caregivers. It is available through the publisher, Headline Kids, and through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Ingrams, Follett, and Baker and Taylor.
