If possible, a dog is a good guard because it’s barking can alert you that an intruder may be approaching.

Pretend you are a burglar and examine your home for any weak points.

Then fix them. For example, do you have a window-mounted air conditioner that can be stolen easily or pushed in to gain entrance?

If so, re-install it more securely. Consider what you own that could attract burglars and make those possessions less noticeable.

Burglars often work in pairs. They could be watching you when you pull out of your garage and then ring your doorbell. If nobody answers the door they will try to enter your house in the quickest way.

The most common way of access is through an unlocked door. Remember to lock all doors and windows before leaving.

If you have hollow wood doors or weak door frames, replace them with solid wooden or steel doors (with peepholes), and firm frames. Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Keep shrubbery trimmed to eliminate hiding places. For extra protection, install outdoor floodlights, a fence and gate, and electronic alarm systems.

Don’t put your name on your mailbox because if your phone number is in the phone book a burglar can get it and call your phone number to determine if anyone might be home.

If you are leaving town for a while, make your home look occupied. Ask a relative or a friend to come by daily, but at different times.

Tell them to park their car in your driveway, put out the trash, and take in the mail and newspapers.
