Constipation is irregular bowel movement, usually accompanied by dry and hard stools. Even though it is generally not life threatening, it does cause a lot of discomfort. Follow the following tips to prevent constipation.

Step One The more dietary fiber you eat, the less the chances of getting constipation. Dietary fiber can be found in fruits and vegetables such as apples, pears, leafy greens, cucumber etc. Take plenty of these high fiber foods to keep constipation away. Step Two Drink plenty of fluids (but limit caffeine as caffeine has dehydrating effects). The fluids will keep your stool moist, preventing constipation. Step Three Exercise regularly. Your body gets rid of stool from the digestive system by moving it towards the rectum using your intestine muscle contractions. Exercise will help in stimulating your intestine, which will allow it to move the stool more efficiently and easily out of your body. Step Four Avoid food that contains low amounts of dietary fiber. These will fill you up without giving you the adequate amount of dietary fiber you need to prevent constipation. Step Five When you have the urge, go to the toilet. Do not hold it in because the longer you hold it in, the more water gets absorbed from the stool into your body , and the drier and harder the stool becomes, causing constipation. Step Six If the above steps do not help in preventing constipation, try taking an over the counter laxative such as Metamucil. If these are taken according to the instructions on the package, they can help greatly. Step Seven Lastly, if you have been struggling with constipation, and none of the above have helped, seek medical attention.
