Insomnia Causes
A look at Insomnia causes and some remedies
At some point in life everyone has an experience with insomnia on some level, but for most people the encounter is brief in duration. This may be due in part to a number of variables, and the final relief from insomnia may be the result of an accidental and unconscious change in the habits that induced the insomnia to begin with. For individuals coping with long-term insomnia, life can become a daily struggle to receive enough quality rest to function adequately, and in many cases the battle is lost.
The most common causes of Insomnia are mainly connected to individual habits and lifestyle, although some can have their roots in disease. A person who experiences chronic pain from a physical malady such as spinal problems or Arthritis are at a much greater risk of sleep disturbances, including Insomnia. In these cases Insomnia can cause the individual to have a decrease in energy, activity and general overall health. The importance of restorative sleep is well known within the medical community, and is just recently beginning to be understood by the public.
Insomnia can often be prevented by a review of personal habits and lifestyle, and minor adjustments made to both. The use of alcohol, caffeine or nicotine, especially close to bedtime are leading causes of Insomnia and should be avoided. Ensuring a comfortable sleeping environment can reduce or eliminate Insomnia, and something as simple as a soft pillow or the bedroom temperature can make a positive difference. Stress related to family, job or finances can promote mental function at a time when the mind should be free of thought, and promote Insomnia.
Other aspects of the origins of Insomnia may lie in prescription medications. Certain drugs may actually cause insomnia, and a Physician should be consulted if an individual is experiencing difficulty sleeping, especially with a newly prescribed drug. Too much mental stimulation or physical activity late in the day, such as a violent movie or strenuous exercise may present a problem in sleeping. Finally, a change in schedule, travel, or even attempting to sleep in an unfamiliar place can lead to insomnia.
If all of the aforementioned possible causes of Insomnia are eliminated and sleeplessness is still present, perhaps it is time to seek professional assistance. With proper intervention, most cases of Insomnia can either be totally resolved or managed to a positive conclusion.
