Rodanthe is a beautiful, one time fishing village, now made famous by the movie Nights in Rodanthe. Here’s how to vacation there.

There are only a few hundred houses in the village so rents are at a premium. You will be rewarded with a wonderful vacation if you visit however.

See the sun set into the sea.

Rodanthe is one of the few places on the east coast where you can watch the sun set into the sea-or the Albemarle Sound to be specific.

As far east as the Outer Banks go.

Rodanthe is the easternmost point of the Outer Banks. So, if you want to see the sun rise just a bit before the rest of the Eastern Seaboard Rodanthe is where you want to go.

There are many real estate companies to help.

One that comes to mind is Midgett Realty. The Midgetts are an old Outer Banks fishing family. Originally descended from shipwrecked survivors of “The Grave Yard of the Atlantic” as Cape Hatteras and the Outer Banks are sometimes called.

Watch out in September and October.

This is hurricane time. Aside from a small bit in Florida no piece of the United States sees hurricanes more often. This is one of the reasons why Rodanthe is a mecca for East Coast surfers.

Respect the town.

Many people descend on Rodanthe in the summer and have no clue about the hardy souls that made this their home long before New Jerseyites in Suburbans showed up. Rodanthe is one of the last vestiges of East Coast ocean frontierism. Respect that legacy. Don’t throw trash on the beach and try to keep the annoying Yankee accents to a minimum.

Fishermen come first (local fishermen.)

  • Then surfers.
  • Then tourists.
  • Respect this pecking order and you should have a great vacation.

I love the Outerbanks. We went there about three years ago and visited the lighthouse.
