Explains how to shutdown your own pc or remotely shutdown a PC on an office network using DOS command prompts

This is an easy way to pull a prank on someone, (I take no reponsibility for information lost if you prank someone with this) however it can also be very handy if you are administering a number of computers which are set up on an office network.

**Note: You will need to know the Network Name of the PC you would like to shutdown.

To perform this simple task, (assuming you are using windows 2k or Xp) go to Start => Run

Type in cmd, click OK

A black screen will appear, type shutdown -m \\computername(this isthe netowrk name of the PC) -s and press enter

Example:

shutdown -m \\nemesis -s

This will start a 30 second shutdown sequence on the chosen computer, the only way for this to be stopped is to type

shutdown -m \\nemesis -a

The only change being the "a" this will abort the shutdown.

There is much fun to be had with this command, you can change the timer to 5 seconds or whatever you like, you can also display a message of your choice, for a prank for example you could have it say "Fatal Error: Compu'er says no!" etc, to find out more about what you can do with it, just type the word shutdown in the black box and press enter, it will give you a full list of all the options for the command.

Example:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\barry>shutdown
Usage: shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "c
omment"] [-d up:xx:yy]

No args                 Display this message (same as -?)

-c "comment"            Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f                      Forces running applications to close without war
ning
-d [u][p]:xx:yy         The reason code for the shutdown
u is the user code
p is a planned shutdown code
xx is the major reason code (positive integer le
ss than 256)
yy is the minor reason code (positive integer le
ss than 65536)
