Living With Contentment

Jul 17th, 2010 by Tom_Fowler

Living a contented life is not the same thing as being happy all of the time. Being happy all of the time is impossible, unless you are living in a fool’s paradise. Contentment is a different thing entirely. Let us consider a few of this writer’s ideas on contentment, peace of mind and living a successful life.

To this writer, contentment means that you are at peace with yourself and most of those around you. I say most of those because it is impossible to enjoy total serenity with everyone you encounter. That is, simply put, not the way of the world. Contentment is an attitude, something you have to work at and maintain. There is much in this life to worry and grieve you. Most of it is not worth the emotional cost and worry we place upon ourselves. Learn and practice the difference between a healthy concern over serious situations and needless worry. Contentment will be your reward.

Many years ago there was a line in a popular song which said, “You can be happy if you’ve a mind to.” That is a true and wise statement, for the singer was really speaking more about contentment than fragile happiness. Sadly, it is a truth which many people fail to realize. Contentment – use the word happiness if you wish – is a state of mind and attitude we claim, not something that comes to us a gift. Maintaining a contented outlook requires discipline and a refusal to allow the problems of life to sour us.

You probably will not experience contentment and the joy in living which comes with it if you are shallow, immature person. (If that describes you, you are probably not reading this article!).Successful living and the contentment are indeed cultivated from the sum of our experiences. How we react to those experiences determines who we are today. It is impossible to be content if you have allowed life to beat you down emotionally. Determine that your mindset will be positive and upbeat. Even if you are going through a challenging time in your life, the right mental approach is critical. You would be a fool to be happy and content if undergoing tragedy. However, past a certain point, your core attitude towards life is up to you. No matter what you may experience, your peace of mind is greatly increased by how YOU decide to handle it.

Treat others right and practice the Golden Rule. It will be much easier for you to achieve peace of mind if you have a clear conscience. Be honest and truthful, if for no other reason than to spare yourself of having to keep track of lies and falsehoods. Do not purposely create for yourself situations in which you will feel guilty later on. A clear conscience is a major component of contentment.
