What Foods You Should Eat to Maintain a Healthy Heart, and to Prevent Heart Disease

With heart disease rates rising, it’s more important now than ever to educate yourself on how to maintain a healthy heart. What you eat can affect your heart health greatly, whether in a positive or negative way. Here are some foods that can help keep your heart strong.

Eat fruits that are high in antioxidants. These include: blueberries, prunes, blackberries, strawberries, plums and pomegranates. Find fruits that are deep purple and red in color - chances are they are packed with antioxidants.


Got for vegetables that are dark green and leafy, like kale and spinach. These are packed with vitamins and minerals essential to fighting off diseases and keeping your heart healthy. Broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, tomatoes and beets also are good choices.

Eat fish like salmon and tuna. Salmon and tuna contain Omega 3 fatty acids, which have shown to help lower the risk or coronary heart disease, and promote good brain and nervous system health.

Eat plenty of grains and nuts, such as : flaxseed, oatmeal, almonds, brown rice, and walnuts. Most of these contain Omega 3, fiber, magnesium, and other essential vitamins.

Drink a glass of red wine, dark grape juice, or cranberry juice every day. These all posess powerful antioxidants. Choose soymilk instead of milk, which contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin b and niacin.

If you must eat chocolate, eat dark chocolate made with at least a 70% cocoa content. Dark chocolate can also help lower blood pressure.

Stay away from foods with a high amount of sodium, trans fat, sugar, additives, and that are processed. Cut back on soda, fried food, cakes and doughnuts, candy, junkfood and caffeine.
