How to Avoid Line Backlash When Using a Bait Casting Reel

When using a bait casting reel, backlashes can cause you to spend hours trying to untangle your line. Learn to control the backlash and spend more time fishing.

First we must understand what causes a backlash in the first place. When casting a lure the lure encounters wind resistance and slows. However the RPM on your spool does not slow down as it encounters no wind resistance. The line tries to leave the spool faster than the lure is pulling it away. Hence we get the dreaded bird nest effect. To avoid this simply put light pressure on the line with your thumb to slow the RPM of the spool. This will take time and practice, but once you have mastered it, you'll be able to fish unencumbered. If you are using anti-backlash reel, put a lure on and hold the rod level with floor. Push the button to release the line. Adjust the anti-backlash control to were the lures falls at a very slow rate to the floor. There are magnets in this type of reel that will slow the RPM on your spool. This however is not foolproof. You will still need a little extra drag on your spool using your thumb.
