World’s Largest And Longest Aircrafts of Yesteryears

You’ve seen the longest and largest machines ever built.

You’ve also seen the largest and longest aircrafts ever built. Likewise I’ve already posted an article about the fastest aircraft, water vessels and land and snow vehicles. Now, it’s time to see the largest and longest aircrafts of the past.

1.) Kawanishi H8K: Largest WWII Aircraft Produced by Japan

Kawanishi HSK is the largest World War II aircraft produced by Japan in any quantity. This Japanese Navy flying boat was used during WWII for maritime patrol.

This 28.15 meter long flying vehicle is operated by 10 crews. It is capable of attaining a maximum speed of 465 km/h. The Kawanishi HSK is equipped with 5x20 mm Type 99 cannon, 5 × 7.7 mm Type 97 machine guns and 2 × 800 kg torpedoes.

2.) XH-17 "Flying Crane":Heavy-lift Helicopter with the Largest Rotor Flown

With a rotor diameter of 39.62 meters, the XH-17 "Flying Crane" was the helicopter with the largest rotor ever flown. This flying machine was the first helicopter project of Hughes Aircraft. It was operated by 3 crews and was capable of flying at a gross weight of more than 23,000 kg. The XH-17 is capable of attaining a maximum speed of 145 km/h.

3.) Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant:Largest Land-based Transport Aircraft of WWII

The German made MesserschmittMe 323 Gigant was the largest land-based transport aircraft of World War II. This Gigant, German for giant, was operated by 5 crews. Its length is 28.2 meters. A total of 213 unit of this flying machine was created. Equipped with 18 x 7.92 mm MG 81 machine guns and can accommodate 130 troops, it can attain a maximum speed of 270 km/h   

4.) Lockheed R6V Constitution:Largest Fixed-wing Aircraft Used by the U.S. Navy

The Lockheed R6V Constitution designed and built by Lockheed for the US Navy was a large, propeller-driven, double-decker transport aircraft developed in the 1940s. It was the largest fix-winged aircraft used by the US Navy with a length of 47.6 meters. It can accommodate 168 passengers and is operated by 12 crews. It can fly at a maximum speed of 490 km/h.

5.) Boeing XB-15(Boeing 294): Most Massive and Most Voluminous Airplane Ever Built in the US

The Boeing XB-15 (Boeing 294) was the most massive and most voluminous airplane ever built by the US. This bomber aircraft with a length of 26.7 meters is operated by 10 crews. It has an empty weight of 17,141 kg and with a maximum takeoff weight of 32,139 kg. This enormous flying vessel can achieve a maximum speed of 322 km/h. It is also equipped with 4× 7.62 mm machine guns, 2× 12.7 mm machine guns and 5,400 kg of bombs.

6.) Zeppelin-Staaken R.VI:Largest Aircraft of WWI

The Zeppelin-Staaken R. IV was the largest aircraft to see regular squadron service in World War I. It was a four-engine biplane strategic bomber created by Germany. This huge machine is the only so-called ‘Giant Aircraft’ design built in any quantity. It was also the largest wooden aircraft ever built until the creation of the Hughes H-4 Hercules.

This very large flying machine with a wingspan of 42.2 meters and with a length of 22.1 meters was operated by 7 crews. It can fly at maximum speed of 135 km/h and equipped with 5 machine guns of different type and 2,000 kg of bombs.

7.) Martin JRM Mars: Largest Flying Boat Ever Built

Martin JRM Mars is the largest flying-boat ever produced. This huge flying machine was used in 1945 up to 1956 as a "Flying Dreadnought" by the US navy. From 1956 to present, these flying boats have been used as water bombers all over the world. Seven units were built.

This 35.74 meter long vessel is operated by 4 crews and capable of accommodating 133 troops. It is capable of flying at a maximum speed of 356 km/h or 192 knots.

8.) Hughes H-4 Hercules: World’s Largest Flying Boat and Largest Wingspan of Any Aircraft

The Hughes H-4 Hercules is the world's largest flying boat, and largest wingspan of any aircraft ever built. This Hughes Aircraft creation was a prototype heavy transport aircraft made its only flight on November 2, 1947. This flying machine built from wood was nicknamed ‘Spruce Goose’ is currently on display at Evergreen Aviation Museum in Oregon, USA. Its wingspan is 320 feet in length.

9.) BV238: Heaviest and Largest Aircraft of Axis Power in WWII

BV238 was the heaviest and largest aircraft during World War II. Physically BV238 was the largest aircraft produced by any of the Axis powers in World War II. This German flying boat first flew in 1944.

This 43.36 meter long flying machine is operated by 12 crews. It has a maximum speed of 425 km/h.

10.) Dornier Do X:Heaviest, Largest and Most Powerful Flying Boat

The Dornier Do X was the largest flying boat in the world when it first flew in 1929. It was also the heaviest and most powerful flying boat during those days. This mammoth flying vessel with a length of 41 meters was operated by 10-14 crews. It was capable of accommodating 66-100 passengers and can attain a maximum speed of 211 km/h.

11.) LZ 129 Hindenburg:Largest Flying Machine of Any Kind

The historic LZ 129 Hindenburg of Germany is the largest flying vessel of any kind ever created with a length of 245 meters. This flying machine that can accommodate 40 to 61 passengers was commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship. It can fly at a speed of 135 km/h
