The origins of the universe are not known, it is all unproven theories, and there are in fact many unproven theories on the origins of the universe.
For a subject which nobody really knows anything about, there is an awful lot written on the origins of the universe. For example, if you do a Google search on what happened before the big bang, you will likely get a lot of sites telling you that it well known that time began at the big bang, mostly Christian sites. It is not known at all whether the universe is eternal, or if it began at the big bang. In this article, I will detail a few unproven theories about the origins of the universe.
The Big Freeze Theory
The most popular theory today about the origin of the universe is the big freeze theory, which suggests that the universe began as a singularity of infinite density, in which time did not exist, and then began to expand, for no reason at all. According to this theory, there was no time, so you could not even say that the universe was there for eternity until this happened. It just happened, and that was that. It further says that the universe will continue expanding, and get sucked into black holes, which continue to travel away from the gravity of each other, until proton decay causes them to dissipate. All that is left in the universe after these black holes dissipate, is massless particles, that continue to fly around aimlessly for all eternity.
A black hole is made up of atoms which have grown so cold, the electron stops revolving around the nucleus, and collapses, meaning that the vast majority of the volume is gone, but not the mass. These atoms are infinitely dense, because they could not be any denser, but that does not mean they do not have volume. If there was ever a black hole singularity that had the entire weight of the universe pushing down on it, the atoms that made it up would split, and a big bang would happen. The question is, how can a singularity exist for no reason, when it is fundamentally unstable? There must have been something before it.
The Many Worlds Theory
The many worlds theory suggests that it was the big crunch of the previous universe which caused the big bang. Rather than going backwards, I will try to go forwards in time to explain what would have happened in this theory. Everything would get sucked into black holes, like the ones that already exist in the middle of galaxies, and these black holes would be drawn by gravity back to the middle of the universe. The second law of thermodynamics says that all things move towards equilibrium, and gain entropy, but when the ultimate equilibrium is a black hole singularity that cannot support the weight of itself, there is no final destination for this law, and it gets reset when the next big bang happens.
There are two equations that prove this: energy equals mass, multiplied by the speed of light squared, and mass equals energy divided by the speed of light squared. The amount of energy released is the same every time the big bang happens. It is not surprising that the weight of the entire universe collapsing could have this result, or that the second law of thermodynamics is limited. There are many laws in science which have been proven as limited, and that was the reason for Einstein's theory of relativity.
Some would say that it has been observed that the universe is expanding faster, but if it is, the only reason it could be expanding faster is through propulsion from the stars burning. When the stars burn out, and become black holes, there is no way the universe could expand faster, and gravity would take over. Even if you took away the gravity of the entire universe, something can only travel through a vaccum as fast as it is already going, unless it has propulsion. In this theory, there was no origin of the universe, it always existed.
The Multiverse theory
Not a very popular theory, this theory suggests that our big bang is just one of many, and we simply cannot see all of the other universes that exist out there. It neglects the idea that gravity should have pulled all of these universes, together over eternity. There are other theories on the origins of the universe, like the big bounce, the big rip, etc, but I won't get into them all, it is enough to say that nobody really knows. Christians want you to believe the first theory, because it relies on the fact that God created the universe, and in an eternal universe, you could not take the bible completely literally.
When it was discovered that the universe was expanding, it was taken as proof by most Christian scientists that God created the universe, at the big bang, like it said in Genesis. You can see why they don't want to give up this idea. But for objective scientists, it isn't good enough that you want to believe something, or that it was part of a religion. Science needs to be proven, or at least looked at with impartial common sense.
Einstein had a big problem with the idea that God created the universe, and make no mistake, that is what the most common theory says. Eventually, at the end of his career, he bowed to pressure and said that the cosmological constant in his equations was the biggest blunder of his career. But I believe he was right all along about the universe being eternal, and it was just everyone else who was wrong. Einstein believed that God didn't play dice, and was a Christian like almost all of the scientists of the day. Apparently everyone was Christian in those days. Not the best for impartial science on the origins of the universe.
As a final note, I want to add that I am not a scientist, or a religious person, I am just interested in the origins of the universe. I believe in the many worlds theory, and I believe in reincarnation. I believe that if God is anything, it is everything, so if I had to pick a religion, it would be Buddhism. That's not to say i believe in intelligent design. I believe that everything that is here now has been here before, and will be here again, an infinite amount of times, due to the nature of eternity.
