This article provides readers with tips to become a self employed caregiver.

Do you absolutely love children? Do you have dreams of working in your home or a small day care center? Perhaps you can become a self employed caregiver. In this article, we’ll provide you with steps to become a self employed caregiver.

Get licensed. In certain states you will need to get a license to be able to run your business from your home. Each state has different requirements for running a business and different rules for how many children you can watch and the ratios for that. You could decide to be a self employed caregiver in someone else's home, also.

Name your business. You might want to name your business. You could use your own name in the title, such as Robin's Nest. You could also use general terms, such as Happy Days Childcare. You will also need to decide how much you will charge. To get an idea of what other people are charging in your area, you could call other daycare centers and other in-home childcare businesses. Other self employed caregivers will be able to give you tips and things to avoid.

Another thing to think about would be how much you want to charge, whether it be hourly, daily or weekly. Also, other self employed caregivers can send business your way if they have no openings.

Another way to get business is to tell everyone you know, neighbors, family, friends, local churches, surrounding schools, etc. In addition, advertising in the local newspaper and at the local schools is a good way to get the word out. Also, you will want to decide what type of contract you want to use with the families that you will care for. You will need to keep detailed records for tax purposes.

Some of the things you need to record are your income, car expense (if you use your car), supplies, advertising expenses, and things like that. You can specialize in a certain age group of children or accept all ages. If you have preschool children, you can purchase a curriculum or design your own.

Having a variety of toys to play with is also important. Dress-up clothes, puzzles, blocks, kitchen and food, cars, dolls, games, balls, ride-on toys are just a few examples. You will also want to offer outside time when the weather permits. You will also need to have a rest area, depending on the ages of the children you will be watching.
