Choosing a small breed dog
Some insight on choosing a small breed dog.
Many small breed dogs were specifically bred to be lap dogs, others are downsized versions of larger dogs (i.e.: Toy Poodle), and others had their own purpose. The dogs that were bred as lap dogs were traditionally bred for the wealthy or royalty. The kings and queens of old wanted a furry companion. Many of these breeds are short, typically less than 10 pounds, and many have long hair. Downsized versions of bigger types of dogs, like the toy poodle, will still have some drive to do what the original breed was bred to do. Some breeds that were bred for their own purpose include rat hunters (also called earth dogs), some rabbit hunting dogs, and warning dogs (like the Chihuahua). Earth dogs are naturally inclined to dig, however this does not mean they will but it is something to aware of. These dogs can be boisterous with their barking, and stubborn, but they are intelligent and great family dogs. Rabbit hunting dogs like to chase rodents or critters on land (like an Italian greyhound). Alarm dogs like Chihuahuas will bark or growl if there is something coming close to their home, they were bred to do this. These dogs can be boisterous and loud but will usually take to long hours lounging or sleeping.
When choosing your small breed dog, if you like a low maintenance dog, keep to calmer dogs that are short hair. There are plenty of dogs under 15pounds and/or 14 inches at the shoulder that make wonderful and suitable family pets and companions. Also, remember the smaller the dog the more fragile it is, a step to us is a mountain to a teacup.
A good resource for looking at breeds is the United Kennel Club and American Kennel Club websites under breeds, there you can find a standard of perfection that most dogs in that breed will follow, and photos of that breed to give you an idea of what they look like and what size they are. Always be sure to socialize your dog, and teach it basic commands no matter what size it is.
