Window valance treatments can provide just the right balance between blocking light and keeping your view unobstructed. They can be used alone or with other window treatments such as blinds and curtains. You can create beautiful window valances with minimal or no sewing experience using these easy methods.

Make a V-Shaped Valance

The V-shaped window valance is perhaps the easiest to make. First, take a large piece of fabric and fold it corner to corner to make a large “V” or diamond shape. Make sure the top or longest part is long enough to fit across the curtain rod.

If you don’t know how to sew, you can leave this as-is. Simply drape the valance over the curtain rod and fasten in place with a safety pin or by knotting. The V-shape should hang down in front of the window. If you want a more professional look, fold the long end over a few inches and sew across to form a seam. You can then run a curtain rod through the ends and attach above the window.

Make a Rectangular Valance

The rectangular valance is another of the easiest window valance treatments to create on your own. Take a piece of fabric and measure twice the length of your curtain rod. Fold the fabric in half to make a rectangle. You can sew the top to make a seam for your curtain rod to fit inside. Or, simply drape over the curtain rod and fasten with safety pins or knots.

Making a Shawl Valance

Another easy way to make your own window valance treatments is to use an old shawl. These are typically found in rectangular shapes (elbow shawls), or triangular shapes (shoulder shawls). Drape over your curtain rods for instant window valance treatments. You can sew them if you like, or leave as-is. Try using shawls with long fringe for a more bohemian look. Or, add beads and other decorations. Make them your own.
