Ringing in the ears driving you crazy? Here are some great tips to help cope with tinnitus and help to get some relief from the constant sounds you are experiencing.

Understand that nothing will take away the sound of tinnitus permanently, however for most people there is a way to cover that sound up throughout the day and only have to hear it at night; I will give you sleeping tips later. Many people who suffer from both hearing loss and tinnitus have found that when wearing properly prescribed custom fitted hearing aids they do not hear the sound of their tinnitus at all or it is reduced dramatically. This effect is only felt when the hearing aids are in the ears and turned on. Once you remove the hearing aids or even turn them off the tinnitus is heard again. What happens is the hearing aid provides stimulation to the damaged nerve cells causing them not to send the same intensity of signal to the brain.

Suffering from tinnitus but have no hearing loss, you can also get the same benefit from custom fitted tinnitus masking aids. Similar to a hearing aid without the amplification range a tinnitus masker sends a stimulating signal to the nerves that are damaged. A tinnitus masker should also be properly prescribed and custom fitted.

Controlling the intensity of tinnitus can help lessen the effects it has on sleep, hearing, and concentration. There are some substances that seem to make tinnitus signals more frequent and intense, why is still not completely understood but it has to do with blood vessel restriction, blood flow, and chemical balance in the brain. Cutting back on the consumption of alcohol, nicotine, salt, illicit drugs, certain prescription drugs this must be discussed with your doctor first, and caffeine can make a difference, for some cutting them out completely will make the biggest difference. High blood pressure, stress, and emotions seem to also intensify tinnitus, bottom line take it easy.

Sleeping can be very hard for some because tinnitus becomes even more noticeable when in quit. Keeping the television on with a sleep timer can help, or having a radio next to the bed that plays music or soothing sounds. As stress levels and blood pressure go down it can help so take deep breaths as you are trying to fall asleep. For some wearing a walkman or mp3 with headphones helps, just make sure to have the volume at a lower level so not to cause further damage to the nerve cells in your ears.
