Twitter is a social networking site as well as a micro-blogging tool. With so many tweets appearing on the Twitter site, how do you stand out from the crowd and get your tweets read? We discuss basic ways to help you achieve this goal...

The most important tip is, you must be pro-active. Even if you have alot of followers on Twitter, you will still remain "invisible" until you start exchanging tweets often. You need to become involved in the Twitter community if you want to use Twitter Marketing methods in your business. If you find some interesting articles and helpful information online, make a Twitter post. Some people may re-tweet this article or you may find other users that are interested in meeting you.

A great way to increase your followers that actually read your treets is by re-tweeting. If you find a good resource, article or topic on Twitter that you found helpful, you should re-tweet it. How do you re-tweet? You should copy the original tweet and write the prefix RT and the name of the originator. When your followers see that you are re-tweeting a resource, they may do the same which will result in your user name appearing on their updates. This will give you greater exposure to other users.

People like to know the person behind the tweets, so a nice profile image is a must. Use the tool Twitpic to upload pictures to your profile page. Your pictures can tell a lot about you and your followers can get to know you better through your pictures.

You must be courteous in your communications. If you're addressing your tweets to one person, indicate it so that others know who you are referring to. If someone sends you a message, reply to their message in a timely manner. Most Twitter users want to be heard on the web and if they find individuals who know how to listen, they are more interested in making friends.
