Flying is to bird, walking or running is to mammal and swimming and FLYING is to fish?!

Flying is to bird, walking or running is to mammal and swimming and FLYING is to fish?! Swimming is one of the most

essential traits of marine creatures and failure to possess such trait means death. On the other hand, some marine animals

are capable also of gliding high up in the air that makes them appear like capable of flying like birds. Here are some water

creatures that can fly.

1. Mobula

Mobula is a genus of ray that can glide high up in the air. They belong to the family Myliobatidae or commonly called eagle

rays. They resemble the appearance of Manta rays which are in the same family. It has been reported that Mobula rays in

the Gulf of California can breach as high as 2 meters above the sea.

2. Sailfish

Sailfish is another species of fish that can glide in the air. Sailfish live in warmer sections of all the oceans of the world.

They are blue to gray in color and have a characteristic erectile dorsal fin known as a sail, which often stretches the entire

length of the back. Another remarkable characteristic is their long bill, similar to that of a marlin and swordfish. The recent

record of longest flight of a flying fish is 45 seconds, which was recorded in 2008 in Japan, breaking the previous record

of 42.

3. Marlins

Marlins, like sailfish, can glide in the air. Marlin is a member of a marine fishes called as ""billfish", of which several are

popular in big-game fishing. Marlins are known to be incredibly fast swimmers with a speed reaching 80 km/h or 50 mph.

4. Dolphins

Several species of dolphins can glide in the air and can perform several acrobatic stunts. Dolphins are marine mammals

that are closely related to whales and porpoises. Dolphins vary in size from 1.2 m (4 ft) and 40 kg (90 lb) up to 9.5 m (30 ft)

and 10 tons. They are found worldwide, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves, and are carnivores, mostly

eating fish and squid. Dolphins evolved about ten million years ago, during the Miocene. Dolphins are considered to be

amongst the most intelligent of animals and their often friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them

popular in human culture.

5. Sharks

Sharks are one of the most dreaded sea creatures although there are only a few recorded of attacks to humans. Sharks

are scientifically known as Selachimorpha. They respire with the use of five to seven gill slits. Sharks teeth are replaceable.

Although they are huge creatures, they can glide in mid-air. See image of a flying shark here.

6. Swordfish

Swordfish which is scientifically known as Xiphias gladius are large, highly migratory, predatory fish and it's most prominent

feature is its long, flat bill. They are a popular sport fish, though elusive. Swordfish reach a maximum size of 177 in. (455 cm)

and 1,400 lb (650kg). They are capable of gliding high up in the air also. For an image of a flying Swordfish click here .

7. Tuna

Tunas are one of the fastest swimmers in the water world with an average speed of 70 km/h or 45 mph. Most fishes have

white flesh but tuna have flesh that is pink to dark red. Tunas are capable of living in cooler waters and can survive in a wide

range of ocean environments. Tuna species and fisheries have been over fished, and some stocks are at risk of collapse.

Tuna are capable also of gliding in the air. See image of a flying tuna here .

8. Salmon

Salmon is one of the most fascinating species of fish because after spawning they die. On their journey back to where they

were born they have to traverse hundreds of miles and in doing so they have to pass through lots of obstacles that they need

the ability to glide high into the air. See image of a flying salmon here .
