Buying your first 10 gallon aquarium is an exciting time.  Once you have all decorations, filters, and cycled water in the fish tank, it is time to turn your attention to the freshwater fish.  Stocking a 10 gallon aquarium with freshwater fish can be done in several ways.  The worst thing to do is overstock your aquarium or buy incompatible freshwater fish.

Freshwater Fish for 10 Gallon Aquarium – Goldfish

Goldfish are freshwater fish that can be kept without a heater in the aquarium.  They are also very messy fish that produce a lot of waste.  It is not recommended to keep goldfish in a 10 gallon aquarium, as it will be hard to keep the tank clean.  The water will need to be cleaned more frequently as well.  If you insist on stocking your 10 gallon tank with goldfish, you should stick to one or two goldfish in a 10 gallon aquarium.  Keep in mind that these freshwater fish grow to large sizes and will probably need a larger tank later in their life.

Freshwater Fish for 10 Gallon Aquarium – Small School

Another great choice for freshwater aquarium fish is a small school of the same type.  In a 10 gallon aquarium, you can easily keep a school of five or more neon or cardinal tetras, fancy guppies, or zebra danios.  These small, fast freshwater fish thrive in groups.  With these small schools of fish, you could add a scavenger or two such as ghost shrimp or one of the miniature types of cories.

Freshwater Fish for 10 Gallon Aquarium – Specimen Tank

Another way to stock your 10 gallow aquarium with freshwater fish is to make a specimen tank.  You must take care not to buy a specimen fish that will outgrow the 10 gallon aquarium, however.  Good freshwater fish specimens include many varieties of cichlids, colorful livebearers such as mollies or platies, or something more exotic.  A specimen 10 gallon aquarium would have freshwater fish of only one species.

The final group of freshwater fish for a 10 gallon aquarium is community fish.  These fish get along with all other fish well.  A 10 gallon aquarium is not very large for a community tank, but you can add three of four varieties of freshwater fish to it.

Stocking a 10 gallon aquarium with freshwater fish can be done in many ways.  The most important thing to keep in mind is the compatibility of the fish you choose.  You must also be sure to get only as many freshwater fish as will fit in a 10 gallon aquarium.
