An explanation on How to distinguish between Eclampsia and Pre-eclampsia

Eclampsia and Pre-eclampsia are the conditions where one encounters hypertension during a pregnancy. The hypertension is accompanied with significant amount of protein loss in the urine in both the conditions. It causes the swelling and edema of your face, hands and feet.

If you only have hypertension during a pregnancy which is accompanied with protein loss in urine, you are suffering from Pre-eclampsia.

If you have hypertension during a pregnancy with protein loss in urine which is accompanied by tonic-clonic seizures, you have a condition known as Eclampsia.

Eclampsia is a life threatening condition and the patient should be closely monitored. It is the leading cause of death in first time pregnancies and young mothers, for both the baby and the mother.

The diagnosis of Eclampsia should be made carefully making sure that the seizures are not due to some previous condition. Eclampsia rarely develops in patients without going through Pre-eclampsia.
