Try this quick and easy recipe and learn how to make naan bread to enjoy with your favorite curry dish.

Naan is a round flatbread similar to pita, but with a softer texture. It is a staple in countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Northern India. Traditionally, naan bread is cooked in a clay oven, or tandoor. However, modern variations forego this step. Try this quick and easy recipe and learn how to make naan bread to enjoy with your favorite curry dish.

Step 1:

Activate the yeast. Mix 1 teaspoon dried yeast with 1 tablespoon warm water in a small bowl. Stir in 1 teaspoon demerara sugar*. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes, or until the yeast is covered with a froth.

Step 2:

Combine ingredients. Mix together 7 ounces (by weight) of white flour, ¼ teaspoon salt, and ½ tsp baking powder in a large mixing bowl. Stir in 1 teaspoon vegetable oil, 2 tablespoons natural yogurt, 2 tablespoons milk, and yeast mixture.

Step 3:

Knead the dough and let rise. Press knuckles into the dough repeatedly for several minutes, until it soft and pliable. Cover the mixing bowl with a damp cloth and place in a warm place, such as the top of a warm oven or refrigerator. Allow the dough to rise for 15 minutes.

Step 4:

Divide the dough. Separate dough into four balls, equal in size. Sprinkle your working surface with flour and roll the dough out with a rolling pin. Roll each ball out to approximately ¼ inch thick.

Step 5:

Bake the naan bread. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Grease a cookie sheet with vegetable oil, or use cooking spray. Place the dough onto the cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes.

Step 6:

Serve. Brush with melted butter and serve hot with your favorite curry dish.

Naan bread can be served stuffed with filling, such as meat, nuts, raisins or potatoes. It can be topped with meats, vegetables and cheeses. Raisins and/or spices can be added to the dough for increased flavor. It can also be used as a dip for soups and stews. Use your imagination and find your own favorite ways to enjoy traditional naan bread.

*Demerara sugar is a raw cane sugar, usually pale yellow to brown in color, with a coarse texture and large crystals. In the United States, demerara sugar is also known as turbinado sugar, or raw sugar. It can be found at health food stores, many supermarkets, or in bulk online. A popular brand is “Sugar in the Raw”, which is used in many restaurants and bakeries.
