This article explains what facial redness is and shares home remedies to alleviate facial redness.

What causes a red face?

The most common causes of facial redness are emotions (blushing), room temperature, food allergies, fever, alcohol consumption, medications, and Rosacea. Most of these causes can either be prevented (food allergies, room temperature, and alcohol consumption) or will go away on their own (fever, emotion, and medications when they are stopped).

One common cause of facial redness that cannot be prevented and does not go away by itself is Rosacea. Rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness to areas of the face including the cheeks, nose, chin and/or and forehead. The redness can be in form of a flat rash, raised rash, lines, and pimples. In people with Rosacea there is an overabundance of Dernodex folliculorum mites found on the skin. Everyone has these skin mites, but people with Rosacea have an excess of them.

If left untreated Rosacea can progress, although rarely, to large bumps on the nose called rhinophyma. Rosacea usually develops after the age of 30 and is most common in fair skinned people. Luckily there are treatments available to alleviate the symptoms of Rosacea. It can usually be managed with antibiotics. In severe cases microdermabrasion and laser therapy is used.

In addition to treatments that are prescribed by your doctor, there are many over the counter products and home remedies that can lessen the severity of Rosacea. Over the counter products include Eucerine Redness Relief, Linda Sy's Acne Cover Cream, Linda Sy's Tinted ZincO Cream, and ZENMEDT Support Serum.

Home remedies to alleviate Rosacea symptoms include tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar (topical and/or ingested), and aloe vera.

Tea tree oil can reduce the symptoms of Rosacea. It needs to be applied two to three times a day, especially if you have severe symptoms. When using tea tree oil it is best not to use make up over it since it will block the pores and prevent the tea tree oil from working. To use apply tea tree oil to a clean face using a clean cotton ball.

When you use apple cider vinegar orally it stimulates the release of digestive enzymes and helps balance the bacteria in your intestines. To take orally mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with water and drink. Do this three times a day for maximum effect. Apple cider vinegar can also be applied directly to clean skin with a clean cotton ball to help balance the number of mites on the skin.

When pure aloe vera gel is applied to the skin not only does it help reduce facial redness, but it also soothes and calms the skin. It also helps regenerate and heal skin tissue. Aloe vera is a good remedy to use in conjunction with apple cider vinegar. Since the vinegar can be harsh to the skin the aloe soothes it while helping to regenerate the facial tissue.

Most causes of facial redness are benign. However, some uncommon and serious causes, of facial redness include pancreatic tumors, Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and migraines. When a red face is accompanied by other symptoms it is best to get an official diagnosis from you doctor before trying to alleviate facial redness on your own.
