World's Most Famous and Historic Hills
Here are some notable hills from around the world. Some of these are historic, others are natural wonders and a few are popular for a particular reason.
Oftentimes, hills are hardly notice because they are overshadowed by mountains. Even though they are much
smaller than mountains, there are significant hills that can be found from around the world. Here are some notable
hills from around the world. Some of these are historic, others are natural wonders and a few are popular for a
particular reason.
Calvary

Some hills are famous because of its religious significant to believers. Every Christian, Jews and even Muslims and
other religious group are familiar with the hill famously known as Calvary or Golgotha. The hill is famous because it's
the site of Jesus' crucifixion. The exact location is handed down from antiquity. Although the significance of the name i
s lost to modernity, Calvariae Locus in Latin and Gulgalta in Aramaic all denote "place of skull". In some Christian and
Jewish traditions, the name refers to the location of the skull of Adam. The word 'Calvary' comes from Calvaria in the
Latin Vulgate.
Mamayev Kurgan

Hills are perfect site for monuments or statues to commemorate an event or to honor a great person. Mamayev
Kurgan is a dominant height overlooking the city of Volgorad, Russia. The Mamayev Kurgan features a memorial
complex commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad (August 1942 to February 1943). The battle was a decisive Soviet
victory over Axis forces on the Eastern front of World War II and arguably the bloodiest battle in human history. At the
time of its installation in 1967 the statue of The Motherland Calls formed the largest free-standing sculpture in the
world.
Capitol Hill

Hills are also good location to establish important buildings and related structures like the Capitol Hill. Capitol Hill
is the largest historic residential neighborhood in Washington D.C., stretching easterly in front of the US Capitol along
wide avenues. It is one of the oldest residential communities in Washington, and with roughly 35,000 people in just
under two square miles, it is also one of the most densely populated.
Parliament Hill

Another hill which is the site of important government institution is the Parliament Hill. It is a scenic location on the
southern banks of the Ottawa River in downtown Ottawa, Ontario. Its Gothic revival suite of buildings - the Parliament
Buildings - serves as the home of the Parliament of Canada; the best known of these buildings is the Center Block,
with its prominent Peace Tower, a national symbol. Parliament Hill attracts approximately 3 million visitors each year.
Kremlin Hill
Another city with seven hills is Moscow. Kremlin Hill is one of the seven hills of Moscow and has an altitude up to 145 m.
The hill is situated in the city center, at the confluence of the Moscow River and Neglinnaya River. The Red Square and
the upland part of the Kitai-gorod are located on the hill.
Bunker Hill

Hills are sites of historic battles also. Bunker Hill is the site of the infamous Battle of Bunker Hill that took place on
June 17, 1775 on Breed's Hill, as part of the Siege of Boston during the American Revolutionary War. Because most
of the fighting did not occur on Bunker Hill itself, the conflict is sometimes more accurately called the Battle of Breed's
Hill.
Cemetery Hill
Another hill which is the site of a historic battle is the Cemetery Hill. It is a key terrain feature in Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania. It played prominent roles in all three days of the Battle of Gettysburg from July 1-3, 1863. A nearby
hill was also the site of one of the famous battles in American history - the Cup's Hill.
San Juan Hill
San Juan Hill was the place where Spanish soldiers entrenched themselves in the most famous battle of the
Spanish-American War; the Battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba. The Battle of San Juan Hill took place on July 1,
1898. It was the bloodiest and most famous battle of the Spanish-American War. The battle has become famous
partly because it led directly to the major political rise of Theodore Roosevelt.
The City of Seven Hills

The City of Seven Hills is a nickname sometimes given to the City of Rome. The Seven Hills of Rome east of the
river Tiber form the geographical heart of Rome, within the walls of the ancient city. The seven hills are: Aventine,
Caelian, Capitoline, Esquiline, Palatine, Quirinal and Viminal Hill. The original city was held by tradition to have
been founded by Romulus on the Palatine Hill. Numerous significant buildings and ruins are found on these hills.
Cavanal Hill

Cavanal Hill located at Poteau, Oklahoma is billed as the tallest hill in the world at 1,999 ft or 609 meters, based on the
idea that it would be classified as a mountain if it were 2,000 feet or higher.
Courthouse Butte

Hills are famous tourist attractions as well like the Court House Butte. A butte is an isolated hill with steep, often vertical
sides and a small flat top. This spectacular hill is located in Sedona, Arizona.
Chimney Rock

Some hills were created by erosion and had become famous landmarks and tourist destinations like the Chimney
Rock. The hill is a famous, prominent geological formation in Morrill County in western Nebraska rising nearly 300
feet or 91 m. During the middle 19th century it served as a landmark along the Oregon Trail, the California Trail, and
the Mormon Trail, which ran along the north side of the rock. It is visible for many miles from the east.
One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill or locally called Maungakiekie by Maori people is a 182 meter volcanic peak located in Auckland,
New Zealand. It is an important memorial place for both Maori and other New Zealanders. The suburb around
the base of the hill is also called One Tree Hill. The hill's scoria cones erupted 20,000 - 30,000 years ago,
creating lava flows that covered an area of 20 square kilometers, mostly towards Onehunga, making it the
largest (in terms of area covered) of the Auckland volcanic field. The summit provides views across the Auckland
area, and allows visitors to see both of Auckland's harbors.
Chocolate Hills

A hill regarded as one of the natural wonders of the world and one of the best tourist attractions in Bohol, Philippines
is the Chocolate Hills. It is an unusual geological formation composed of around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills
of about the same size, spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometers or 20 sq mi. They are covered in
green grass that turns brown during the dry season, hence the name. It has been declared the country's 3rd National
Geological Monument and proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Beverly Hills

Some hills are famous because it's the home of the rich and the famous. Beverly Hills is certainly one of the
most popular hills nowadays. It is a city in the western part of Los Angeles County, California, United States.
Beverly Hills contains some of the largest homes in the area and the nation. These homes range from the
extravagant and luxurious in size, to the more elegant and modern homes, and then to the many small duplex
rental units and detached homes with less than 3,000 sq ft (280 sq meters). The city's average household
income is just over $87,000. In 2007, Coldwell banker lists Beverly Hills as the most expensive housing market
(second year in a row) in the United States, with a median home price of over $2.2 million.
