Twilight continues to captivate me. My heart keeps getting drawn into the love story. My joy keeps growing with each moment my daughter and I talk so easily about the story, like a portal of peace in this changing world. The perfect man, Edward, is an irresistible dream that is just out of reach. But is Edward really perfect?

Watching Edward in the Twilight movie for the 5th time I realized how conflicted he is. He longs not be a monster and through his own strength achieves this 'non-monster' status ~ to a point. It is at this point he becomes imperfect. We desire to view Edward, not as a monster, but a victim. After all, wasn't Edward on his death bed and did not have a choice to become a monster? Are you a victim? Did you get hurt so deeply by something that you feel you have no choice? Truth is, we all have a choice, no matter what our circumstance. Anger, bitterness, fear, retribution or therapy never heals, it only prolongs and blinds us to truth. I long not to be a monster also. And I try 'in my own strength' to change but it just does not seem to work!

Edward still thirsts for blood and has convinced himself that feeding on animals is. Yet, this does not satisfy his hunger. He longs to remember what being human was like. He longs to remember what being human felt like. His eternal state of always awake, always thirsting, always lacking is a constant unrelenting struggle. Every second of his existence he has to keep his actions in check. There is nothing perfect about this that should attract our heart, yet Edward attracts us. Why?

The very core of whom we are is what attracts us to Edward. It is at our innermost being that longs for perfect love. Created in the image of the incorruptible God of the Universe, this hole, or longing, in our heart can only be filled by God Himself. And the sole way to fill this void is by the precious blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. Yet each of us tries to fill this void by actions, programs, business, others and the list continue on. We are always awake, always thirsting, always lacking in this unrelenting struggle for find 'perfect' love.

Edward's struggle is a part of each of us. A heart trying on its own strength to be perfect. He is the human man women long to be loved and cherished by, or the man men long to be. Yet, Edward, trying through his own strength, we see his imperfection. He never achieves what he strives so fiercely to lay hold of. He is continually searching for the freedom that only comes through grace.

Vampires have an unquenchable thirst for blood. It is through blood that they experience life. Without blood vampires perish from existence. The same with us. Without the blood shed by Jesus we will perish and move from life to death, eternal death.

Twilight is fiction and fiction can offer a brief glimpse of life combined with a sheltered place to reflect. A non threatening and comfortable place to discuss the secret things of the heart. However, each of us will face what Edward faces daily ~ What is love? God has placed life and death before us. He tells us to choose life. Have you chosen life today? Or will you go through eternity searching for what is revealed in Jesus Christ?

Death is certain. Death to everlasting life or death to everlasting, never-ending death and longing. Edward sees the monster he is. He has taken the first step toward forgiveness and grace. It is when we recognize and admit our imperfection and sin with no human capacity to transform this state can we accept the gift of the cross. Romans tells us that, ‘We have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God' and we must assume sole responsibility for our lack to receive John 3:16-17, ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life . .for God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through Him might be saved.' Edward needs to surrender to the grace of God. No work apart from faith can please God.

You’re loved by a faithful Father. His Son paid the penalty of your sin so that you can find life, find perfect. Receive Him today.
