Basics for Making Money Online Using Blogs

So, you've probably read a story in Entrepreneur Magazine, or seen a story on your favorite news program, about a person who has made it big making money online using blogs, and you thought to yourself, "Hey! I can do that!"

Maybe you've been blogging for a while, for the sheer joy of it, without giving a thought to making money using your blog. Maybe you are new to blogging altogether. Maybe you've tried to make money online using blogs and failed.

However it is that you got here, and no matter what your background is in relationship to blogging, if you've never made money online using blogs there are a handful of basic key principles you need to follow:

1) Knowledge is power, and this is no more true than when it comes to making money online using blogs. There are a ton of ways that you can make money online using blogs, but not all of them are created equal. For example, some blogs make make money just fine using context ad placement services, such as Google AdWords. Other blogs will only see pennies a day from AdWords, and should look to options like affiliate marketing. Doing your homework and finding out what is available in terms of advertising programs can make the difference between making a few pennies a month and making a few hundred dollars a month.

2) Traffic is essential. There is a direct relationship between the number of eyeballs that look at your blog and the number of digits in your bottom line. A couple hundred visitors a month isn't enough to make money online using blogs. You need to have several thousand visitors a month if you want to see a steady stream of income. You need to focus first on getting people to read your blog, and only secondarily on how to make money online using your blog.

3) Making money online using blogs takes time. Most bloggers quit blogging, or at least quit trying to make money online using their blog, within just a few months. It can take six months, a year, or more for a blog to begin making money, and it can take longer than that for the amount of money a blog makes to be a reliable source of income. If you can stick with it through those lean seasons early on, you are more likely to reap fat rewards in the long run.
