It is not hard to repair bathroom sink plumbing. I will walk you through how to replace faucet supply lines and the drain trap. Before you start be sure you have everything on the list. I am only repairing the plumbing not the fixtures.

Things You’ll Need:

  • pipe tape
  • pipe dope
  • channel lock or pipe wrench
  • pliers
  • new trap set(can be purchased at any hardware store as a set)
  • new supply lines (can be purchased at any hardware store)
  • old towel
  • small bucket

Step 1 Clean out everything from under the sink. Spread the towel out on the bottom of the vanity to catch any water that may drip while working.

Step 2 Turn the water on at the sink then turn off the water at the bottom of the supply lines (shut-off valves). Once the water is completely off it is safe to remove the supply lines. With the pliers remove from the bottom of the faucet first.

Step 3 Once loose from the faucet, remove from the water line coming from the wall. Clean all 4 sets of threads with the towel making sure to dry them.

Step 4 Now wrap all 4 sets of threads with the pipe tape. Only wrap tape around 3 times covering all threads.

Step 5 Now carefully thread the new supply lines on to the faucet first make sure not to cross thread. Once tight repeat on the water lines.

Step 6 Now place the small bucket under the drain trap (u bend) and loosen the upper nut first. Once that is loose, loosen the nut on the pipe that goes into the wall. Place in bucket. It will be full of water. Remove the old washers and nuts from the pipes. Keep these handy. They can be used again unless they are broken.

Step 7 Now the towel clean and dry the pipes. Place the large nut, threads facing out, on to the pipe coming from the wall. Now place the washer, beveled edge out, on the same pipe.

Step 8 Now place and hold the large nut on the drain from the sink, face down away from the sink, and hold there while placing the washer, beveled edge down, on.

Step 9 Place pipe dope around the threads of the new trap (u bend). Slide over the pipe coming from the wall, then from the sink. Slide the large nuts to the threads and tighten with hands until you can not turn them anymore.

Step 10 Give each nut a half turn with the channel locks or pipe wrench. NO MORE! They can break. You have repaired you bathroom sink plumbing! Tips Be sure you have everything you need before starting.

Always make double sure the water to the supply lines is off. Check this by leaving the faucet running when using the shut-off valves.

Warning

Never try to over tighten plastic nuts. They will crack and leak.
