Want to purchase chickens for meat, eggs, or just for show but don't have anywhere local that sells them? The solution is easy, just hope online and order them and have them shipped to you.

Buying chickens online is a relatively easy process. First you need to ind a reputable hatchery online. I tend to favour Murry McMurry Hatchery; they have a decent selection and I've always gotten very healthy day old chicks from them. Other sites I've used include Cackle Hatchery, Randall Burkey and Double R Supplies. Check out their website thoroughly and read about their policies before making any purchase! Often hatcheries have minimum purchase quantities. This is to make sure there is body heat in the box to keep them warm on the trip.

When you're checking out the hatcheries, also check to see what types of chickens they have in stock. Many of the more popular hatcheries tend to be booked out months ahead for spring deliveries, so get your order in early! The hatcheries also generally will not ship chicks during the winter months, as it's too cold for the day old chicks to dravel by post.

Remember when you get them shipped that your chicks will not be delivered by the postman to you personally. They will stay nice and warm at your local postoffice who will call you as soon as they come in. Make sure that you pick them up that day, baby chicks don't eat or drink anything in that first day of life (which is why they can ship them) so they'll be hungry and thristy when you pick them up. If you're not the one driving it's okay to open up the box in the car, don’t worry, they can't fly yet, and may appreciate the warmth of your hand.

A few things to consider before you actually made your purchase. First, is it legal to own chickens where you live? Some counties do not allow "farm" animals. And some Neighborhood Associations have noise ordinances which might prohibit you from owning rosters. Also make sure to plan enough room, day old chicken might be cute and tiny, but they’ll get much bigger!
