How to Read and Understand the Lovers Tarot Card in a Tarot Spread
Some packs depict the Lovers card as a young couple being joined in marriage, others show a young man standing between two attractive women.
Symbolism in the Lover's Tarot Card
The Lovers card is a symbol of love, marriage and choice. Cupid may be hovering in a cloud over the couple's head with an arrow from his bow, aimed in their direction. The young man on the card often relates to the myth of the Judgement of Paris. The man is torn between two lovers and torn between his conscience and his passions. Deeper within this is Adam and Eve's story: the forbidden fruit and the serpent.
The Lovers in a Tarot Reading
Just as the name of the card suggests, the Lovers is a card that puts emphasis on romance, love and choices within a relationship. So if this card relates to emotional matters, then it usually implies that there are choices to be made. A decision is necessary and often this means deciding between two pathways. There is no half-way. There is no sitting on the fence and no spending too long deliberating. Whoever this card has been chosen for will just have to take a deep breath and decide one way or another.
There is also a chance, when this card appears, that there are some opportunities that were turned down in the past that could once again be up for grabs. Or travel could bring a surprise encounter. In romance, the Lovers describes a happy and beautiful relationship. If there has been discord in the past, it could be that the couple will soon be reunited. There's also the chance that new people are about to enter the querant's life and this could either bring delight, or confusion. If they're already part of a pair, then it's possible that someone outside their relationship will be rocking the boat. Decisions will have to be made and it's hard to know which one is the right one. The only thing that can be done is: follow the heart and hope for the best.
Reversed Meaning of the Lovers Tarot Card
This card in a tarot reading gives indication of anything from a new partnership, to something much deeper. Someone might be seeking change and there is indication of many experiences and perhaps unions. But equally, if it is reversed, there could be many separations as well. There is a strong desire to be happy in life, to get on, to love and be loved. But reversed, this card suggests the querent should try not to be too selfish in attitude. They must always consider the thoughts and feelings of your loved-ones.
And to avoid future upset, they should be sure that the decisions reached within a partnership are ones that both partners are happy and satisfied with. In conclusion, the Lovers is a card of choice, love, attraction and uncertainty. Any relationship, but particularly a love one, seems to be currently bringing with it a lot of difficult choices and decisions. But this card suggests the need to respect and come to a compromise within your partnership
