Siberia

In Siberia, the Koryak people are reported to eat toxic mushrooms and drink their own or other’s urine. It is said that they have used the psychoactive Manita muscaria, commonly known as Fly Agaric, as a ceremonial entheogen. The active alkaloid of this poisonous mushroom when consume remain unchanged as it pass through the human body, making the urine retain its intoxicating effects.

A person who drinks the urine will experience its psychoactive effects. Koryak men who could not afford the mushrooms drink the urine of those who could. Tribesmen drink their own urine in order to prolong the experience and on their journey, carry their own urine with them. In some occasion, they concentrated their urine by partially freezing it and ingesting the unfrozen liquid.

Haiti

This is quite unusual! Because of extreme poverty, many Haitians resort on eating filth or dirt. This bizarre thing is called Rhypophagy, an eating disorder.

In Gaul (present-day France) during the Roman times, the Gallic people, as part of their tradition, used their urine to whiten their teeth.

China

The Chinese people are known for being superstitious and for their unusual beliefs and traditions. As part of their beliefs, the urine of young boys has been regarded as a curative. In the southern part of the country, faces of babies are washed with urine to protect the skin.

France

During the 17th century, aristocratic French women are said to bath in urine to keep their skin beautiful. In addition, as a sort of medication, French people customarily soaked stockings in urine and wrapped them around their necks in order to cure strep throat.

Mexico

In Sierra Madre, Mexico, when someone has a broken bone, farmers prepare poultices by having a child urinate into a bowl of powdered charred corn. The mixture is made into a paste and applied to the skin.

Renaissance

The used of urine as teeth-whitening persist up to the Renaissance period although they did not necessarily consume their own urine as people did during Ancient time.

Islam

Would you believe that drinking camel’s urine was advocated by Muhammad? In Sunni Islam (the largest branch of Islam), the Sahih Bukhari, which forms one of the 6 major Hadith collections, quotes the Prophet Muhammad advocating drinking camel’s urine as a medicine in several verses.

Kevin Michael “GG” Allin

One person with the most bizarre and notorious behavior is the Punk musician and performance artist Kevin Michael GG Allin. He is notoriously well-remembered for engaging in coprophagia, the bizarre habit of consuming feces, during his performances. This American singer-song writer who was born Jesus Christ Allin in 1956 whose performances were characterized by wildly transgressive acts such as; performing naked, committing self-injury, defecating and urinating onstage, rolling in feces and often consuming excrement (yuck!) and even attacking audience members died of heroin overdose in 1993.

Funnily enough, I was only reading the other day about a celebrity who swears she keeps looking young because she drinks urine. Wish I could remember who it was now. Yuk!
