Going to school to visit your child's teacher may bring momentary fear to your heart. Fear not, the dreaded parent-teacher conference need not cause you a moment's concern. All you need to do is prepare yourself!

Too many times, parents remember when they were the child and they tend to fear conferences.  Change the way you think!  Parent teacher conferences are a chance for parents and teachers to relate, share about the child in question and work out a plan between home and school to keep the little angel on track!  That is what is should be and that is what you need to make sure it becomes!

First, be aware of what is happening in your child's life every day.  Look at the papers coming home.  Help where it is needed.  Be a part of what is happening day to day.

Second, ask your child what is happening in the classroom.  This is especially important close to conferences.  Ask if there is anything you need to know before you go.  Remind your child that you will be speaking to the teacher soon and that you want to be prepared.  If there are any concerns that come up, write them down in a small notebook so you will remember them.

As you prepare to leave for the conference, remember that this is for you child's benefit.  Be confident and be on time!  Keep your questions and tone respectful.  If you do not like or understand what you hear, ask for clarification.  If you only hear negatives, ask what your child is doing well.  Ask what is being done to help correct problems.  Ask what you can do to help with problems.

LIsten, really hear what your child's teacher is saying.  Through all of this, take notes so you can share with your child unless your child is there with you.  Try to keep a smile on your face and relax.  Parent teacher conference, I will say one more time, are a place to evaluate how your child is doing and what can be done to make the child's performance even better.  Imagine yourself as a team player meeting with the school coach.  Make it an enjoyable experience!
