Spoken Word Aims to Save our Youth

Feb 10th, 2010 by VoicesofourCity

A spoken word organization puts its energy at servicing gay youth that suffer from homophobia and prejudice

Voices of our City is a newly started non profit organization that proves to be a great place for LGBT youths to go and voice their opinions, fears, questions, emotions, and hardships through the use of spoken word. This organization not only will provide a meeting place for the members to gather and engage in workshops and sharpen their skill, but there is also a website built for those who wish to have more anonymity.  The website includes writing tips, motivational pieces, and a “blog spot” so the members can share their work and gain feed back from others.  The response and traffic has been impressive for such a green website.

The creativity of these youths is amazing and to have this kind of of the LGBT youth in our nation in regards to suicide, mental health issues, drug use, and drop out rates is mind boggling.  This organization has a clear purpose to direct its attention to those children and give them another way to look at life. The founder of Voices of our City is a beautiful example of our younger generation coming out to form a new movement and to prove to all that the spoken word is for everyone to hear, learn, absorb and hopefully understand.

Jessica Pelletier, the founder of this site should be commended on establishing a place for these youths to feel welcome, safe and able to express themselves in word.  Good luck to this organization and all who participate.  This organization will definitely leave a positive impact on those it touches.  It is a bright and refreshing creation by a motivated and compassionate advocate.
