How To Create A Chore List For The Whole Family

If it seems like you are the ONLY person cleaning up around the house, or perhaps you have teenagers who act as if they have no idea what needs to be done to keep the house clean and the household running smoothly -- perhaps creating a Family Chore List will help!

Creating a simple chore list can be a good way to keep everybody on task while instilling responsibility, and possibly relieving one person (usually Mom) from having to do all the household cleaning.

  • Either by family meeting, or by parental decision - one person should be responsible for assigning tasks on a weekly or monthly basis.  In my opinion, (at least in the beginning) it's best to sit down and discuss with your kids WHICH chores they'd like to be assigned.  Maybe cleaning the bathroom isn't their thing, but they love to vacuum!
  • I've created a simple 1-page worksheet that you can download at Scribd here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/8843830/Family-Task-List to assign tasks to and mark off when completed. The basics are covered: dishes, dust, vacuum, laundry, trash, bathroom, etc. If you have a few more, I've left a few blank spaces.  Of course, you can always create your own using Word tables or an Excel spreadsheet.
  • Post on a bulletin board or the refrigerator (boy do I have memories of this!) in order for all to see what needs to be done, and what has been done... in case you have a teen asking for a favor or privilege -- this way you can easily see if they're up-to-date!
  • You may want to create a rewards or allowance system based on the chore list. When I was a kid, we were paid by the task - which seemed to add a little more motivation to get things done!
  • Chores should be age appropriate and considerate of work, school or agreed upon activities.

Creating a chore list can be an effective tool for the entire family!
