Men: Learn these skills now so you can impress your family and friends, have a happier, easier, life, and avoid nagging.

  1. Changing a Car Tire. Men, you might not ever have to use this skill on your own car, but you never know when a friend, daughter, or co-worker might need you to come to her rescue. It is todays modern act of heroics and will make you stand up above the crowd for being a decent human being. So, the very first, and hardest, skill any man should try to acquire is the ability to change a flat tire without calling a tow truck.

  2. Table Manners. Which fork to use and when, is not the most important table manners a man needs to learn. He needs to learn how to chew with his mouth closed, and control body function sounds. He needs to learn how to say “Please pass the...” rather than reaching for it. A man also needs to be able to wait until others have been served before starting to eat. Ultimately though, he needs to learn that it is okay to eat while sitting up at a table occasionally, rather than always in front of the television.

  3. Learn how to fix a dripping tap. One of the most annoying things is a dripping tap, in addition to the sound it is wasteful of water, by learning how to fix a dripping tap you can save yourself some aggravation and some cash. Remember the first thing you do, is go under the sink and turn off the water supply.

  4. Toilet Seat position. The correct position for the toilet seat is the “down” position, this is relatively one of the easiest skills to learn and master, simply use your right or left hand, reach forward, and shut the seat. This not only prevents anyone from “falling in” but is less unsightly. To go one step beyond, and for bonus points, a man could additionally progress to shutting the lid too.

  5. The MOST important skill for any man to have is Toilet Paper Changing. If you learn nothing else, learn this. Timing is everything, it is not acceptable to leave one piece of paper on the roll and think you got away with something. If you see only one or two pieces left, use them and change the roll. This is done simply and takes only about 15 seconds, yet it is the most over looked skill of them all.

  6. Teach your children well. Every skill listed here is one that any man, often through example, can teach to his children. As an added note, women need these skills too, but seem to pick them up easier. Especially the first one, any woman knows the fastest way to change a car tire is by finding a nice man to do it for her.

Are guys really that bad? Are women any better? I've had both male and female roommates that drove me batty. The guys with the toilet seats and toilet paper, sure. But the women would leave their things, esepcially clothes, all over the place, and dirty dishes piled up, shoes blocking the door. How hard is it to put your shoes over another foot onto the shoe rack?

Excellently written piece, but I do agree wtih the lady that left the comment about the ladies needing to know how to change a tire. We used to live way out in the country, and it definitely would have helped if my wife would have learned to change a tire. I do remember showing her. I don't remember if she ever learned it or not, but when a person lives in the country like we did she needs to know how to do that. Her dad didn't even teach her to drive. I taught her after we got married. Great article! Johnny Yuma

i loved point 3 and 5. This drives me batty, and I don't know how to fix it!! The toilet paper, yes,, what is so hard about putting another roll on...usually we women have another roll under the bathroom sink or someplace handy...they know where it is!! Only thing I think I differ on,, is we women need to learn how to change a tire. It is so hard for a light-weight woman to do, I know. But, sometimes I think it would be good if our fathers taught us how to change a tire also. I guess that comes from being a Driver Education Instructor!! We try to teach all students to change a tire. Thanks for article.
