Pandemic II: The Free Flash Game That Gives Users a Chance to Create a Super Virus, Bacteria, or Parasite

Jan 6th, 2009 by Laratacita

Crazy Monkey Games shows the dangers of superbugs with Pandemic II. It's dark humor also lets us know how hard it is to wipe out remote islands like Madagascar.

When a player first enters the game world, he will be asked to name his superbug and decide whether his attempts at mass genocide will take the form of a virus, a bacterium, or a parasite.  Each pathogen has specific strengths and weaknesses.  After the user chooses which type of superbug he wishes to create, he is then thrust into the game world.

The side of the screen will display the country where the disease started, and the bottom of the screen allows the user to access the game menu, the world menu, and the disease menu. The middle of the screen tracks how many evolution points the suber bug has earned, and a slider on the far right of the screen controls how quickly game time passes.

Diseases start with one or two traits that cannot be bought off, and a symptom.  Disease symptoms affect the lethality, infectivity, and visibility.   These three stats are tracked by a blue bar at the bottom of the disease green.  Controlling these conditions is key to Pandemic II’s strategy.  A disease that is too visible will quickly become a target of vaccines and the governments of the world become more alert to it.   As the game progresses, traits can be bought and sold to improve on the disease’s lethality, infectivity, and invisibility.

The objective of the game may be sick, but it is dark humor in the tradition of Flying Buffalo’s Nuclear War card game.

High points of Pandemic II:

?    Playtime is not excessively long
?    Does not require constant attention from the user
?    Two Modes of Play: Relaxed and Realistic
?    Not all of the starting traits for a disease are desirable from a strategic viewpoint

Things that Crazy Monkey Games Could Improve in this Flash Game:

?    Madagascar is extremely difficult to wipe out with its one shipping point
?    Games can sometimes become bogged down
?    Evolution points should be gained slightly faster

If the player does not mind games with a sick premise, or he wants to see how easily a pandemic could occur in a model world, this offering can provide hours of simple entertainment and will not distract the user from other casual games they might be playing that require more input from the user.
