Sing Off?

What is the Sing Off? What's all the buzz about?

Sing off how? Sing off what? Sing off where?

Sing off: a cappella, songs, on prime time television.

On December 11, 2009, NBC launched a new talent show called, Sing Off. The show is a bit of a spin on the launching of singing careers, in that all of the groups who perform on Sing Off do so a cappella; without musical accompaniment.

Nick Lechey, former Mr. Jessica Simpson, hosted the debut show.

Sing Off is not going to be a lasting part of the new spring line-up. It was created to fill space and keep ratings during the in between seasons slump. But will Sing Off fill the bill?

You must give a cappella singers credit; they've got to have perfect voices to vocalize without singing off key. They've got no instruments to cover for them. Aside from the modern dress, Sing Off brings to me, visions of a barbershop quartet; nostalgic to say the least. The show is entertaining, even if it may be a little bland for this generation. The idea of it brings a smile to my face, if only because it is atypical of today's television fare. Personally, I enjoy the slower speed of Sing Off. It is far more relaxing than comedy of today, or all the shoot 'em up, blow 'em up things an the tube these days.

It wasn't created to be a fixture, but what if Sing Off catches on? Could Sing Off be the next American Idol type sensation? Or has our society become too addicted to flashing lights, gunfire, and blood?

Perhaps I am a bit old-fashioned, but I do enjoy slower paced programs and movies than I usually find filling the channel menu. Sing Off is a welcomed filler in my book, and I hope it does catch on with the general public at large.

Do you sing off key? I know that I sing off key. That's what impresses me the most about those who perform a cappella. Not only must they be aware of their voices, but they have to keep track of not only the words to the song, but where they are in it. There is no musical background to help them keep time or key. And, those who are truly good at it sing in perfect harmony. It is honestly amazing! If MTV isn't your thing, check out Sing Off.
