Nurse Memoir #3

This is certainly going to date me, but it shows an interresting stance from those years then to how things are now.

This will entertain the over 50 group and the under 30, might not get the humor in this episode of a student nurse.

When student nurses were looked at like ladies, they wore dresses, pinnefores over that dress while the entire uniform was buttoned with studs in the back. At times the plastic studs were a bit of a jab in the back while one of the ladies was sitting in a hardwood chair. In the days of class room education in the basement of a nurse's residence in Brooklyn, New York in the early 1960's we did not sit long. The practical was 3 months into training, allowing the students to be out of the uncomfortable seats.

Jessica made it a point to sit in the front row, for what reason, I don't know to this day. If by any chance all the first row seats were all taken, she would actually ask someone to move so she could sit in front. This cool spring day, she would regret that placement.

The class of 14 , mostly young girls filed in and took their seats. Jessica was front and center as "Hatchet face", our name for Miss M. began her scope of the future nurses of America. Hatchet face always found something on somebody to bring to the full attention of the class for an example.  This would be Jessica's day in all her glory.

Miss M. did not have to look very hard before she bluntly stated for Jessica, whom she referred to as Miss Domes, to sit up correctly in the chair. Jessica was making adjustments , by sitting as such for the plastic studs that were  making her uncomfortable. As Jessica sat upright, she forgot her lady like posture and her legs became as open as the locks at the Panama Canal. Miss M. quickly told her to close her legs as her breath was not a pleasant experience. The entire class burst out in laughter while Hatchet face and Jessica remained solemn
