Managing Your Facebook Privacy

Nov 28th, 2009 by Anthony Villanueva

A lot of people have landed in hot water because of the things they have written in their blogs or in forums. The same could be said about Facebook so we should really be careful about what we post.

Philippine Actress / Director in Hot Water due to Facebook Status Update

Philippine Actress and Director, Gina Alajar, posted an opinion regarding what she thinks about the Manny Pacquiao and Krista Ranillo's rumored affair. And now she might be facing a lawsuit to be filed by the Ranillo family.

In her own defense, she said that she merely posted her opinion on her status wall and her Facebook account was available only to her friends.  She said that what she wrote was not meant for the public.  And she also said that whoever leaked out her information outside her account were infact violating her privacy.

Quebec Woman Loses Insurance Benefits due to Facebook Photo

Meanwhile, an IBM employee from Bromont, Quebec, Canada loses her insurance benefits for posting her vacation photo. Natalie Blachard has been on a long term disability leave from her job. She has been receiving benefits from the company insurer, Manulife, for one and a half year.

Last fall the checks suddenly stopped. She called her insurance agent to inquire. She found out that they indeed terminated her benefits - because they found pictures of her posing with Chippendale dancers at a bar, attending a birthday party, and enjoying a beach vacation.  But Blachard said that it was exactly what her doctor recommended for her to cure her depression.

Obama's Warning

Even President Obama himself warned us a couple of months ago about what we post on Facebook.  He said that whatever we post on the internet is permanent and it could comeback one day to haunt us.

Recommendation

I think the best way would be - to have one public Facebook account and another very private account. Our private account should be accessible to our close friends and relatives only while our public account would be accessible to acquaintances. Especially, if we intend to use our facebook account for professional and business networking.
